Enhancements to the CDL-hosted Databases

2000 greets CDL’s users with a wide range of new and improved services.  In addition to the debut of SearchLight, we encourage you to explore these important enhancements:

REQUEST
Enhancements to the “Request” service for convenient automatic requests by UC faculty, graduate students, and staff include the following:

  • Articles found in many CDL-hosted journal databases may now be requested.  Users will be alerted when the full content of articles is available online.  Request for articles will be available in the following databases: ABI, BIOSIS, COMP, CC, INSPEC, MAGS, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO (not in PE or any of the @ databases).
  • Books held locally may be requested from another campus if they are missing, withdrawn, or checked out from your campus (campuses with links to circulation status: UCD, UCI, UCR, UCSC,UCSD, and UCSF).
  • Users may request a total of 20 books per day (up from 10) and a total of 20 articles from all databases.

Request is still limited to Faculty, Staff, and Graduate students.

ENHANCED DISCOVERY TOOLS
The CDL-hosted Databases interface, which includes access to the Melvyl(c) Union Catalog, now includes a drop-down menu for easy linking to other journal databases.

UC PRESS BOOKS
Electronic editions include the full content of approximately 60 UC Press backlist books as well as new releases (made available via the Electronic Editions) linked from the Melvyl Catalog.

NEW INDEXES

  • In ABI/Inform users may search by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) or North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes.
  • In GEOREF users may browse by Thesaurus terms.
  • In PsycINFO users may search by General Topics, groupings of commonly searched subjects (also known as “search hedges”).

ELECTRONIC JOURNAL URL DISPLAYS
Displays of URLs for electronic journals in the Periodicals database have been moved to a section called “Online Access” and now include campus labels to indicate clearly which campuses have access.  Print holdings are now labeled “Print Access”.

SEARCH HISTORIES
Users may now delete multiple searches from their search histories.

SAVE/LIST
Users may now delete duplicates from their saved lists, and new lists are easier to create.

LINKS TO HOLDINGS
Links to holdings are now available for ArtAbstracts, Anthropological Literature, the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, Georef, RILM, History of Science, and the English Short Title Catalog
