DataUp Service Description
The DataUp add-in and web application help researchers organize, manage, archive, and share their tabular data. The major functionality of both tools is to guide researchers through the following:

Carry out a best practices check to determine if there are issues present that might make use or interpretation of the data difficult

Create metadata in standardized EML (Ecological Metadata Language) format

Describe the attributes (i.e. columns) of the dataset in standard EML format

Obtain a unique identifier for the dataset

Generate a data citation

Post the data and associated metadata to a data repository

The California Digital Library received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) last year to develop education and outreach materials for librarians surrounding the DMPTool, a service that helps researchers create and manage data management plans. As part of this grant, the DMPTool Partners are running a DMPTool Webinar series that will cover topics related to data curation, data management, and using the DMPTool to promote these topics.

Check here for the webinar schedule & information (updated frequently): http://blogs.library.ucla.edu/dmptool/webinar-series/

A few things to note:

The first webinar will be on Tuesday, May 28. We plan to present on Tuesdays, with current plans for ~15 webinars. The series will go into Fall 2013.

All webinars will be recorded and made available for viewing afterward.

The webinar schedule depends on presenters’ availability (hence the TBD dates).

We are always interested in new webinar ideas; please send them to Carly Strasser (carly.strasser@ucop.edu) or leave them as a comment on the webinar page.

We plan to collect these webinars and make them available as a set. We then hope to create a short course in Data Management with the DMPTool that will offer certification for librarians as “DMPTool Experts” –we are still working on the title!

Please circulate widely – the webinar series for anyone interested in promoting and/or using the DMPTool!

We successfully established a “Practice Repository” for DataUp, allowing those interested in using DataUp in practice mode to get an identifier and archive their practice data without impacting the legitimate content in ONEShare.

DataUp was featured at the Microsoft Research booth during the American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2012 Fall Meeting in San Francisco, CA (3-7 December). Visitors to the booth could watch a demonstration of DataUp and ask questions about its features.

Strasser presented on DataUp at the AGU meeting for a session on tools and workflows for research data (invited).

DataUp was presented at the Coalition for Networked Information 2012 Members Meeting in Washington, DC (10-11 December) by Strasser. The presentation was part of a session on tools for managing and archiving research data.

We presented DataUp to the UC libraries community at two, two-day workshops on data curation in early November. The first workshop took place in Oakland (8-9 November), and the second was at UC Irvine (13-14 November).

Recent Enhancements, News, and Activities

We formally launched DataUp on 2 October. Most of September was devoted to preparing for this launch. This included close coordination among several groups, including CDL, Microsoft Research, OuterCurve Foundation, and DataONE.

We worked with the developers worked throughout October to correct bugs that were prohibiting the creation of valid metadata by DataUp. DataUp code was finalized by the developers contracted by Microsoft in November.

We completed the main DataUp website development in close collaboration with the User Experience Design Team at CDL.

We acquired the appropriate certificates for the DataUp web application and web service, both hosted on Microsoft® Azure.

We set up and populated the public DataUp BitBucket site, with code, documentation, links, and known issues with the software.

We worked closely with DataONE and the University of New Mexico Library to set up the ONEShare repository, created exclusively for DataUp data. We ensured that content was successfully entering ONEShare and the metadata generated was valid.

The DataUp blog was moved to the Data Pub blog site, and content was merged to create a single CDL data blog. The URL formerly used for the DataUp blog will now house the main DataUp website.

We hosted a DataUp webinar on 3 October, which was attended by at least 70 individuals. The slides (http://www.slideshare.net/carlystrasser/dataup-webinar-20121002 and recording http://www.cdlib.org/services/uc3/webinars/20121003/lib/playback.html) are now available.

DataUp team members attended the 2012 Microsoft eScience Workshop (8-9 October in Chicago). DataUp was part of the workshop “DemoFest”, where workshop attendees could observe someone using the tool and ask questions.

On 24 October, DataUp was featured in the “Tools” section of a workshop for researchers at UC Davis. The Workshop was one of the Open Access Week activities.

Recent Enhancements, News, and Activities

For the last month we have been preparing for the release of the DataUp tool, scheduled for 2 October. We are coordinating our launch with the outreach and communication efforts of Microsoft Research, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, OuterCurve Foundation, and DataONE. Launch preparations in the last month have included developing website content, acquiring the appropriate certificates for the new DataUp websites, writing the press release for the DataUp launch, and negotiating the contracts of project completion and website hosting with Microsoft Research. A screencast demonstrating the web application’s functionality was created for the website as well. The current content at dataup.cdlib.org, the blog, will be moved to the datapub.cdlib.org to make room for the new DataUp website. In early August, DataUp was featured in a workshop at the Ecological Society of America Annual Meeting in Portland Oregon, where the attendees much anticipate the tool’s release.

Recent Enhancements, News, and Activities
For the last month we have been testing out beta versions of the DataUp tools and relaying issues and bugs to the Microsoft Research developers. We received a beta version of the tools in mid-July and demonstrated the add-in to the DataONE (http://www.dataone.org) users group and at the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners meeting (ESIP). There is much excitement about the DataUp tools, and CDL is evaluating strategies for continued development over the next 12 months. In addition to presentations at the DataONE users group meeting and ESIP meetings, the DataUp tool was featured at the Library of Congress’ Digital Preservation meeting this month.

We have received the final version of the two DataUp software tools from Microsoft Research developers and are now preparing for the public launch of the tools on September 18, 2012. We are coordinating our launch with the outreach and communication efforts of Microsoft Research, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, OuterCurve Foundation, and DataONE.
