Have an iPad? Help the Library evaluate a new research tool that is being considered for possible subscription.

The libraries of the University of California are running a trial of a new technology called BrowZine, a tablet application that allows you to browse, read and monitor many of the library’s journals, all from your iPad. To facilitate your research, articles found in BrowZine can easily be sent to Zotero, Dropbox or several other services to help keep all of your information together in one place.

To learn more, please take a look at this short (two minute) video:

http://thirdiron.com/browzine-ipad-app/video/

For the trial, search for “BrowZine” in the App Store and download the app for free; when initially launching BrowZine, select your campus from the drop down list.

This trial ends April 30, 2013.

We would appreciate your feedback while we consider subscribing to this service. After trying BrowZine, please fill out this short survey.

If you have any problems or questions, please contact us via our Support/Troubleshooting form linked from http://www.cdlib.org/services/collections/evaluation/browzine.html

Many licensed ProQuest databases (including databases from CSA and Chadwyck-Healey) will transition to the new ProQuest platform on Wednesday, August 8. A full list of the transitioning systemwide-licensed databases with their PIDs is available at: http://www.cdlib.org/services/collections/rl/docs/transitions/ProQuest_Systemwide_Database_Transition.doc.

Note: Your campus may have additional databases from ProQuest that are also transitioning to the new platform on August 8. A complete list of transitioning ProQuest databases is available at http://www.proquest.com/en-US/promos/platform/databases_supported.shtml.

When the transition is complete, managed PIDs will link to the new platform, and database-direct URLs will redirect to the new platform. Please check with your campus electronic resources contact to update any customized or locally maintained URLs as needed.

Chadwyck-Healey databases not part of this transition will continue to be accessible via the current platform, and will be transitioned to the new platform at a later date. For more information about the new platform and features, please see http://www.proquest.com/en-US/promos/platform/feature_01.shtml.

Remote access: There are known problems with remote access to the new platform via WebVPN at UCI and UCR. The campuses are continuing to work to resolve these issues. Please see these campus’ remote access pages for more information.

User account migration
- My Research accounts (ProQuest and CSA Illumina) – After creating a new My Research account on the new platform, there will be an option to import alerts and searches from your existing My Research accounts. This functionality will be available after the transition on Wednesday.
- My Archive accounts (Chadwyck-Healey) – Searches and alerts will need to be manually copied from the old account to the new account.

Training Materials for the New ProQuest Interface
ProQuest has a rich array of training materials for their new interface. For the bulk of materials, go to http://proquest.com/go/training. The materials range from links to YouTube tutorials, Quick Start Reference Overview, user guides, posters, table tents and more. (Ignore the links on the upper left hand corner and focus on the links in the middle of the page.) Some training materials are available in multiple languages, so if you’re an English language speaker, make sure you choose one in English.

ProQuest has also created a number of LibGuides for their resources, available at http://proquest.libguides.com/. On the LibGuides Web pages, you can find guides to specific databases, links to live Webinars and recordings, as well as screencasts and tutorials.

By Holly Eggleston, Electronic Resource Analyst

An updated version of the Technical Requirements for Licensed Resources document has been posted to http://www.cdlib.org/gateways/vendors/guidelines_technical.html.

The Technical Requirements document is primarily intended for new and continuing vendors of CDL’s licensed electronic resources, but it’s worth a read by those interested in how we set expectations for these vendors. This document summarizes the major technical issues considered by the CDL during our decision-making process, and offers vendors insight into our preferred solutions, why they’re important to the University of California, and what their implications are for prospective vendors.

The CDL sets a high standard for vendors that ultimately benefits all academic customers and leads to more competitive products for the publisher or vendor.

Major changes:

Combines the previous two format-specific versions for ejournals and databases into a single document

Collocation of similar, related issues for ease of review and distribution

Substantial updates and additions to several sections, including:

Shibboleth

Remote Access

Accessibility / ADA Compliance

Mobile Computing

For questions and comments about the Technical Requirements document, please contact cdlsupport-l@ucop.edu.

CDL is pleased to announce the following resource liaison assignments within the Resource Liaisons (RL) program. Resource Liaisons provide a crucial link between the UC system and our licensed resource vendors, as well as providing a link between CDL and the campuses. Resource Liaisons serve as the primary conduit to communicate resource issues to vendors and CDL, as well as offering expertise and assistance for activities during the resource’s lifecycle. Some Resource Liaisons are responsible for several databases on the same platform.

By Holly Eggleston, Electronic Resource Analyst, Collections

CDL is pleased to announce the launch of the CDL ERMS Portal, an interface for campus library staff to find licensing-related information about CDL managed electronic resources. The CDL ERMS Portal is part of the larger Serials Solutions 360 Resource Manager system, which has been in use by CDL staff since late 2009.

To access the CDL ERMS Portal, go to http://qc6mn3ja7m.search.serialssolutions.com/

Library staff, quickly find answers to your everyday questions, including:

Should my campus have access to this title or database?

Can I use this title to fulfill an ILL request?

Can I use this article in an electronic coursepack?

What the CDL ERMS Portal is not:

The portal is not a public access point for journals and databases. To ensure successful access to your resource content, please use the links provided through the Next Generation Melvyl Pilot and/or your local campus discovery services.

The portal lists UC electronic resources for which CDL manages the payment or licensing processes. Campus-licensed resources and titles are not included in this interface.

Ebook titles are not included in the portal’s title search results. However, licensing information about Ebook packages can be found under the CDL-Managed Databases & Packages.

Because this is a service hosted at Serials Solutions, there are some limitations to the design of the portal and to the information that can be included. CDL staff have worked to adapt the portal to meet the needs of campus library staff within these constraints, and we hope to develop additional reports from the 360 Resource Manager system in the coming year. In the meantime, we look forward to your thoughts and comments about this new tool.

Questions and feedback regarding the portal should be sent to the CDL Helpline.

For questions about the CDL ERMS project and ongoing development activities, please contact Holly Eggleston (holly.eggleston@ucop.edu), or see the project web page at http://www.cdlib.org/services/collections/erms/.

CDL is pleased to welcome the following group of librarians to the Resource Liaisons (RL) program.

We thank the Resource Liaisons themselves, as well as the campus libraries that are contributing staff to this important program.
