By Heather Christenson, Project Manager, Mass Digitization

In an important new development, HathiTrust now provides a way for the UC campuses to offer full view of some of the in-copyright books in HathiTrust to our print disabled patrons. A designated representative on campus (typically someone from an office devoted to services for persons with disabilities) will be able to access works in HathiTrust that are owned by that campus, on behalf of users at the campus who have print disabilities, and can distribute full PDFs of the works to those users.

Campuses must take action to implement this service.

Details, including terms of use and a form to begin registration, are available at http://bit.ly/14keW0C. To register, please complete the form with appropriate signatures and send to feedback@issues.hathitrust.org. For campuses who intend to set up this service, more information about the service can be found on the HathiTrust site: http://www.hathitrust.org/accessibility.

HathiTrust expects to make improvements to the process as time goes on.

By Adolfo Tarango, Head, Systemwide Collection Services

Last month Springer topped our list for most titles distributed, 2731, which included the first titles sent, 41, for the newest Springer subject collection, Energy monographs. These include all the recently licensed 2013 titles published to date. Following it, our other significant distributions were for Wiley (309 titles), IEEE (87 titles), and SuperStar (85 titles). For journals, EBSCO (161 titles), Open Access (126 titles), Wiley (62 titles), and Cambridge (31 titles) represented our highest distributions.

On Tuesday, May 14th, SCP posted a file of records for the Dacheng journals, 6,971 titles. These are brief records that SCP created from available vendor data. Over time, the campuses will receive full-level OCLC records to replace these brief records. The replacement of records will be done per the standard SCP process for the replacement of records: the replaced record will be redistributed as a delete and the new record sent coded as new.

Until next month …

In response to user feedback from the UC community, OCLC has relabeled more than 10,000,000 Melvyl (WorldCat Local) records making it easy to distinguish if a digitized work in HathiTrust is available in full text or for limited viewing only.

Limited View

Those books not in the public domain, around 7,000,000, are now labeled HathiTrust Digital Library Limited view (search only). See the following example:

With this message, users know that the full text is not accessible, but that the text is available for searching for words or phrases.

Finding full text materials

Users determine if any of the 3,000,000 HathiTrust books in the public domain are available in full text by the presence of the “View Now” link on the results screen.

Clicking the “View Now” link displays the link to the full text of the item. For public domain works in HathiTrust, a new label displays on the results and item level screens: HathiTrust Digital Library Full View.

From the results screen

From the item record screen

Another easy way to find public domain works is by conducting a keyword search such as “cookery” and using the facets to limit to ebooks, and the year 1902 (or a year prior to 1923).

OCLC is now working on a process to find and relabel the records that are added each month.

Thanks for your persistence

Thanks to the pressure and persistence of many UC public services staff, faculty and students, the UC University Librarians, and in particular, Kathryn Stine, Alison Ray, Lynne Cameron, Lena Zentall and Patti Martin at CDL and Jeff Penka and Bill Carney at OCLC.

Here’s an excellent and easy opportunity to broaden your knowledge of some of the projects CDL and the campuses are working on.

CDL recently hosted a webinar series for Users Council that’s now widely available to UC staff. (The CDL’s Users Council is a group responsible for communicating information between the CDL and the campuses concerning use of CDL tools, services and collections. Users Council consists of a liaison from each UC campus, including LBNL, LLNL and the Regional Library Facilities. A CDL representative is an ex officio member. )

The topics covered were chosen through a member survey, with survey expertise provided by CDL’s Senior Assessment Analyst Jane Lee.

This year there were six lively sessions covering the following ground:

Melvyl: A Snapshot of Issues, Patricia Martin, Director, Discovery & Delivery and Lena Zentall, Project Manager, Discovery & Delivery

Services Today & Tomorrow, Laine Farley, Executive Director, CDL

What’s Happening in Collections: 15 Triumphs in 30 Minutes, Wendy Parfrey, Shared Content Coordinator

User Experience Design and CDL, Rachael Hu, User Experience Design Manager

eScholarship: Supporting OA Scholarly Communication at UC, Catherine Mitchell, Director, Access& Publishing; Justin Gonder, eScholarship Product Manager; and Katie Fortney, Copyright Policy & Education Officer

HathiTrust and Mass Digitization, Heather Christenson, Mass Digitization Project Manager

Each of the one-hour recordings, along with PowerPoint slides, is available for your viewing at: http://www.cdlib.org/groups/users_council/

(The presentations are password protected because some of the information is not for public consumption.)

By Adolfo Tarango, Head, Systemwide Collection Services

Some interesting developments and cancellations have kept us on our toes the last few months. Changes involving the CRC Press NETBASES are without a doubt the most complicated of these. As it stands now, the NETBASES can be broken out into six groups. The first is CHEMnetBASE which was renewed without change and as such you should see no difference in how it is being cataloged. The second group is ENGnetBASE which, for 2013, became our first Demand Driven Acquisitions (DDA) package. SCP created a new 793 to track the DDA titles, “CRC Press. ENGnetBASE online monographs DDA 2013.” This is a systemwide DDA pilot and as of this writing, 23 titles have been distributed to all the campuses.

While paid for by a subset of campuses, all the campuses will be getting records for titles in the third group of NETBASES, consisting of ENVIROnetBASE, MATHnetBASE, and STATSnetBASE. Since all the campuses are receiving records, we are not tagging titles with any new 793. Three campuses subscribed to BIOMEDICALSCIENCEnetBASE, group four, so SCP will provide catalog records to Davis, Irvine, and San Diego for these titles. The fifth group consists of those NETBASES which campuses have locally subscribed to. Because less than three campuses are subscribing to these NETBASES, SCP will not be cataloging them; it will be the responsibility of the subscribing campuses to catalog these locally licensed resources.

The sixth group of NETBASES consists of those from which campuses have chosen to selectively purchase individual titles. As with the locally subscribed NETBASES noted above, it will be the responsibility of the individual campuses to catalog these titles. But a note of caution, many titles from CRC Press are made available in multiple NETBASES. SCP strongly advises campuses put in place a mechanism for checking to see if any of these selected titles are available from already licensed NETBASES. Lastly, be advised that SCP will continue to be responsible for catalog maintenance on any CRC Press titles we originally cataloged regardless of whether the systemwide subscription to the specific NETBASE was cancelled and/or because cataloging of the new content is being done locally.

SCP has been working on providing records for the Nineteenth Century Collection Online. When ready, the records will be distributed to the campuses as a separate file. SCP is also busy with the creation of records for titles in the Chinese language resource Dacheng. For this package, the East Asian Bibliographers Group and the SCP Advisory Committee approved an initial distribution of brief records, to be replaced at a later date with full catalog records. About 7000 journal titles will be distributed with the records containing not much more data than a title, a 793 hook, and an 856 with corresponding URL.

Another Chinese language resource we are working on is the Airiti package. This also happens to be a DDA pilot. A significant departure from past practice will be that Airiti records will be distributed by the vendor directly to the campuses. SCP has worked with the vendor so they can provide usable MARC records. At the point of actual purchase, the corresponding vendor record will be replaced by a fully cataloged OCLC record. Notice to delete the vendor record and distribution of the new record will be accomplished using standard procedures.

SCP and UCI cataloging staff are in the midst of planning a NGTS cataloging pilot whereby UCI catalogers will catalog titles from the Wiley O-book package. SCP will continue to be responsible for distributing the records. We look to develop a seamless workflow process that will result in a faster turnaround time for these titles with minimal intervention on the part of SCP. Because UCI catalogers will follow all relevant SCP cataloging practices and procedures, records should be indistinguishable from previously cataloged SCP records. Campuses should treat them as any other SCP records, and in fact, the records will be included in the regular SCP record files. SCP will be responsible for any subsequent record maintenance so campuses can continue using existing problem reporting procedures if need be.

Cataloging gains for the first quarter of 2013 totaled 774 serials, 4 integrating resources, and 8,357 monographs. Major additions for serials include those for Academic Search Complete (412 titles) and Open Access (356 titles) of which 234 were for DOAJ titles. For monographs, the most significant gains were to Early American Imprints Series I (2249 titles), IEEE conference proceedings (1424 titles), SuperStar (1265 titles), SpringerLink (576 titles), National Academies Press (373 titles), Wiley (314 titles), CalDocs (309 titles), Apabi (144 titles), CRC Press (82 titles), AIP conference proceedings (75 titles), and Knovel (74 titles). We had one new package, the ACS Symposium Series (1091 titles). You may view the complete cataloging counts as of the end of the first quarter for every package cataloged at http://www.cdlib.org/services/collections/scp/docs/2013q1.pdf.

Until next month …

Redesigned Website

By Heather Christenson, Project Manager, Mass Digitization

HathiTrust has released an updated, fresh design and new features for its website. The latest design incorporates feedback submitted by HathiTrust users and input from HathiTrust’s User Experience and Communications working groups. We encourage you to test out the new interface and submit your suggestions and ideas via the feedback link at the bottom of the page.

Some of the highlights of the new interface include:

Look and feel – HathiTrust has been given a fresh, user-friendly design that unifies all parts of the website.

Accessibility – HathiTrust continues its tradition of style with function, paying particular attention to accessibility in major and minor functional components of the interface.

An engaging homepage – A consolidated search area and prominent links to user collections, hand-picked books, and our mobile interface, invite users to explore the HathiTrust collection. Links to social media, the HathiTrust Research Center, and HathiTrust projects provide updates on activities and invite engagement.

Login benefits – Users can now log in from anywhere on the site, and the login area of the homepage highlights the benefits of logging in to users from partner institutions.

Improvements to the reading interface – Our new online reading interface increases the amount of space available for reading books, while still keeping reading controls and bibliographic information readily accessible.

Persistent tabbed search box – Options for searching the bibliographic catalog and full-text of works have been combined into a single tabbed search, with help information to guide users in deciding which search to use. A persistent search header allows searches to be performed from any page on the website.

Special thanks to the University of Michigan programmers, designers, project managers, and systems staff who made the new design happen.

HT Research Center
The HathiTrust Research Center (HTRC) has announced new data mining and analytics tools, providing a much-needed entry point to large-scale analysis of HathiTrust’s contents. http://ovpitnews.iu.edu/news/page/normal/24146.html

Indiana University and the University of Illinois are the founding partners of the HTRC. The new infrastructure release follows an aggressive development path set forth by the HTRC Executive Management Team at the 2012 HTRC UnCamp, a gathering of HTRC developers, researchers and librarians. Users can now apply sophisticated computational research methodology across the large-scale collection, leveraging metadata crafted over time by libraries.
