By Holly Eggleston, Electronic Resource Analyst /Resource Liaison Coordinator

Following is an update on the status of the migration of many former RLG resources from the OCLC FirstSearch platform to the EBSCOhost platform scheduled for late 2012.

As the databases become available on the EBSCOhost platform, CDL will provide overlap access to both the new and old platforms by redirecting the database persistent identifier (PID) to point to the interim/overlap page.

Currently, it is expected that the old platform will be retired at the end of 2012, at which time the overlap access pages will also be retired and the CDL Shared Cataloging Program (SCP) staff will redirect the database PIDs to point to the databases on the EBSCOhost platform.

List of affected resources, PIDs, and their projected activation dates:

September

Anthropology Plus (http://uclibs.org/PID/34670)

Anthropological Index – merged into Anthropology Plus

Anthropological Literature – merged into Anthropology Plus

FRANCIS (http://uclibs.org/PID/9572)

October

Chicano Database (http://uclibs.org/PID/9574)

December

History of Science, Technology and Medicine (http://uclibs.org/PID/9767)

Index to 19 th -Century American Art Periodicals (http://uclibs.org/PID/9571)

Russian Academy of Sciences Bibliographies (http://uclibs.org/PID/9568)

Not Migrating

Heritage of the Printed Book (formerly Hand Press Book Database)

The UC Libraries currently subscribe to Avery Index via ProQuest, so our subscription to Avery is not affected.

CDL will provide overlap access to Anthropology Plus and Francis beginning 10/11/12. These two databases are currently active and accessible through the Choose Database feature on EBSCOhost; however, they may not appear in alphabetical order in the listing.

By Teal Smith, User Communication and Instruction Librarian, UC Merced and Resource Liaison, PsycINFO

Teal Smith (UCM), the Resource Liaison for PsycINFO (on the ProQuest/CSA Illumina platform), has notified CDL that some PsycINFO records are missing journal issue publication dates. This problem is expected to be resolved by the end of March.

From ProQuest technical support: “reported records have been corrected. All records going forward will contain the year date, and the remaining records will be corrected in the yearly reload which is fast approaching [March].”

The problem seems to be fairly widespread. Below is a screenshot of some examples. Teal reports, “I did a sample search for ‘china’ and ranked by relevancy (ranking defaults to the most recent, but the problem was fixed for recent records). On the first page, 12 of 25 records were missing the date.”

UC campuses now have access to these electronic resources as part of CDL and campus one-time purchases (some campuses may have already had access via local subscriptions):

17th and 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers (All campuses. On the Gale platform.)

http://uclibs.org/PID/181632

The newspapers and news pamphlets gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757-1817) represent the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media available from the British Library. The collection includes more than 1000 pamphlets, proclamations, newsbooks and newspapers from the period. The collection covers more than 200 years of accounts from newspapers from England, Ireland, Scotland and a handful of papers from British colonies in the Americas and Asia. The original Burney volumes are now in a fragile condition and have been restricted from ordinary reading room use. Up until now, the only access has been through microfilm. This digital collection will put these early newspapers into the hands of scholars and researchers, opening up new areas of study in English history as well as in many other areas.

19th Century U.S Newspapers (All campuses. On the Gale platform.)

http://uclibs.org/PID/181633

Provides access to primary source newspaper content from the 19th century, featuring full-text content and images from numerous newspapers from a range of urban and rural regions throughout the U.S. The collection encompasses the entire 19th century, with an emphasis on such topics as the American Civil War, African-American culture and history, Western migration and Antebellum-era life, among other subjects. The majority of the newspapers have never before been accessible online.

Archives Unbound: Global Missions and Theology (All campuses. On the Gale platform.)

http://uclibs.org/PID/181631

This collection documents the broad range of nineteenth century religious missionary activities, practices and thought in the United States by reproducing pivotal personal narratives, organizational records and biographies of the essential leaders, simple missionaries and churches.

JSTOR Arts & Sciences IX (All campuses except UCSF. On the JSTOR platform.)

http://uclibs.org/PID/31860

With a minimum of 150 titles available by the end of 2012, the Arts & Sciences IX Collection widens JSTOR’s coverage in business and the social sciences. Journals from over 25 countries provide outstanding international diversity, and rare materials bring unique depth to the collection, with research covering archaeology, anthropology, sociology, business, economics, population studies, and political science.

Pravda Digital Archive 1912-2009 (All campuses. On the East View platform.)

http://uclibs.org/PID/181615

Pravda (or “Truth”) was the official voice of Soviet communism and the Central Committee of the Communist Party between 1918 and 1991, when Boris Yeltsin signed a decree closing Pravda down. Founded in 1912 in St. Petersburg, Russia, Pravda originated as an underground, daily workers’ newspaper, and soon became the main newspaper of the revolutionary wing of the Russian socialist movement.

After the collapse of the USSR, nationalist and communist journalists intermittently published a print newspaper and an online newspaper under the name Pravda. Today, Pravda represents the oppositional stance of the Communist Party in the Russian Federation.

Thesaurus Linguae Latinae (TTL) Online (All campuses except UCSF. On the de Gruyter platform)

http://uclibs.org/PID/182247

This is the largest dictionary of the Latin language encompassing the use of Latin from its origin to the 7th century A.D. The entries list every single known occurrence of Latin words together with precise citations. This is a unique and indispensable tool for scholars dealing with any subject that relates to the Latin language. I.e. Classics, History, Literature, Linguistics, French, Italian, Spanish (these languages – among a couple of others – originate from Latin). It is also a tool for even the life and biomedical sciences that use Latin vocabularies. The project that produced the print version of this source started at the end of the 19th century and is still going on; the planned completion will be in 2050.
The online edition of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae is published by De Gruyter and provides access to the contents of all lexicon articles published up to 2008 (that is the letters A–M, O, P–pomifer, porta–pulso), the articles in the Onomasticon volumes (letters C and D), the Index librorum and the Praemonenda de rationibus et usu operis, a multilingual introduction to the printed version of the Thesaurus. The content of TTL online is thus identical to that of the printed version of the Thesaurus. Each year the contents of the newly printed fascicles will be added to the database.

World Scholar: Latin America and the Caribbean (All campuses except UCSF. On the Gale platform.) http://uclibs.org/PID/181634

This multidisciplinary resource will include a comprehensive range of content for the region, providing research across the humanities, both for current Latin America and the Caribbean and as a historical perspective back through the colonial period.

Elements include:

A combination of contemporary and historical documents designed to reveal a true depiction of the nature, integrity and culture of Latin America.

Documents in multiple languages

Historical and contemporary maps

Does your favorite resource look different? Many of our licensed resources have undergone (or are about to undergo) changes due to interface upgrades or transitions to another publishing platform or vendor platform.

The following resources have either already changed or are about to change. Please note the upcoming changes to EBSCOhost, scheduled for August 4th, and to the Wiley Online Library, scheduled for August 7-8th, as these two platforms represent a number of licensed resources.

July 1, 2010 — EconLit (Transition from OvidSP to ProQuest/CSA Illumina)
http://uclibs.org/PID/9525

EconLit (formerly on OvidSP) moved to ProQuest/CSA on July 1, 2010. This change was made because UC bibliographers decided that the CSA Illumina platform was better suited to the EconLit content and provided superior searching and display features. Further information on this resource is available from the EconLit Resource Liaison, Jim Church (jchurch@library.berkeley.edu).

July 1, 2010 — FIAF (Transition from OvidSP to ProQuest/Chadwyck-Healey)
http://uclibs.org/PID/105490

FIAF (formerly on OvidSP) moved to ProQuest/Chadwyck-Healey on July 1, 2010. This change was made because UC bibliographers decided that the Chadwyck-Healey interface was an improvement over previous interface functionality. Further information on this resource is available from the FIAF Resource Liaison, Gary Handman (ghandman@library.berkeley.edu).

July 1, 2010 — World Bank Databases (Interface switch from licensed version to Open Access)

As of July 1st, four of the World Bank databases that previously were restricted to several campuses as part of the World Bank e-Library license are now freely available. The databases include Africa Development Indicators, Global Development Finance, World Development Indicators (WDI), and World Bank Worldwide Development Indicators. The PIDs for these resources have already been updated to go to the new URLs.

As part of UC’s continuing support of Open Access journals and alternatives to traditional publishing practices, UC campuses are now institutional supporting members of the two resources listed below.

arXiv.org The University of California is now an institutional supporting member of arXiv, an open-access database to e-prints in physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance and statistics. For more information, see the arXiv.org Support FAQ.

Nucleic Acids Research http://nar.oxfordjournals.org Nucleic Acids Research (NAR) publishes the results of leading edge research into physical, chemical, biochemical and biological aspects of nucleic acids and proteins involved in nucleic acid metabolism and/or interactions. It enables the rapid publication of papers under the following categories: Chemistry and synthetic biology; Computational biology; Gene regulation, chromatin and epigenetics; Genome integrity, repair and replication; Genomics; Molecular biology; Nucleic acid enzymes; RNA and Structural biology. A Survey and Summary section provides a format for brief reviews. The first issue of each year is devoted to biological databases, and an issue in July is devoted to papers describing web-based software resources of value to the biological community.

Oxford University Press and the Editors of Nucleic Acids Research (NAR) launched an Open Access initiative for NAR in 2005. This means that it is no longer necessary to hold a subscription in order to read current NAR content online. The UC Libraries have an Institutional Membership of NAR.

A 2010 institutional membership provides discounted publication charges (50% discount) for Corresponding authors based at the member institution. Additionally, institutional memberships help to underwrite the publication charges for author’s from institutions in developing countries. For more information, see NAR’s Open Access Initiative.

By Holly Eggleston, Resource Liaison Coordinator and Electronic Resource Analyst

CDL is pleased to announce the following resource liaison assignments within the Resource Liaisons (RL) program. Resource Liaisons provide a crucial link between the UC system and our licensed resource vendors, as well as providing a link between CDL and the campuses. Resource Liaisons serve as the primary conduit to communicate resource issues to vendors and CDL, as well as offering expertise and assistance for activities during the resource’s lifecycle. Some Resource Liaisons are responsible for several databases on the same platform.

Business Source Complete – Tony Lin, UC Irvine
Literature Resource Center – Frank Gravier, UC Santa Cruz
MD Consult Core Collection – Bob Johnson, UC Irvine
MICROMEDEX Healthcare Series – Sue McGuinness, UC San Diego
New England Journal of Medicine – Judy Bube, UC Irvine
NTRL: National Technical Reports Library – Lisa Ngo, UC Berkeley
RAND California – Harrison Decker, UC Berkeley

We thank the Resource Liaisons themselves, as well as the campus libraries that are contributing staff to this important program.

To learn more about the Resource Liaisons program, please see http://www.cdlib.org/services/collections/rl/.
