In response to user feedback from the UC community, OCLC has relabeled more than 10,000,000 Melvyl (WorldCat Local) records making it easy to distinguish if a digitized work in HathiTrust is available in full text or for limited viewing only.

Limited View

Those books not in the public domain, around 7,000,000, are now labeled HathiTrust Digital Library Limited view (search only). See the following example:

With this message, users know that the full text is not accessible, but that the text is available for searching for words or phrases.

Finding full text materials

Users determine if any of the 3,000,000 HathiTrust books in the public domain are available in full text by the presence of the “View Now” link on the results screen.

Clicking the “View Now” link displays the link to the full text of the item. For public domain works in HathiTrust, a new label displays on the results and item level screens: HathiTrust Digital Library Full View.

From the results screen

From the item record screen

Another easy way to find public domain works is by conducting a keyword search such as “cookery” and using the facets to limit to ebooks, and the year 1902 (or a year prior to 1923).

OCLC is now working on a process to find and relabel the records that are added each month.

Thanks for your persistence

Thanks to the pressure and persistence of many UC public services staff, faculty and students, the UC University Librarians, and in particular, Kathryn Stine, Alison Ray, Lynne Cameron, Lena Zentall and Patti Martin at CDL and Jeff Penka and Bill Carney at OCLC.

Here’s an excellent and easy opportunity to broaden your knowledge of some of the projects CDL and the campuses are working on.

CDL recently hosted a webinar series for Users Council that’s now widely available to UC staff. (The CDL’s Users Council is a group responsible for communicating information between the CDL and the campuses concerning use of CDL tools, services and collections. Users Council consists of a liaison from each UC campus, including LBNL, LLNL and the Regional Library Facilities. A CDL representative is an ex officio member. )

The topics covered were chosen through a member survey, with survey expertise provided by CDL’s Senior Assessment Analyst Jane Lee.

This year there were six lively sessions covering the following ground:

Melvyl: A Snapshot of Issues, Patricia Martin, Director, Discovery & Delivery and Lena Zentall, Project Manager, Discovery & Delivery

Services Today & Tomorrow, Laine Farley, Executive Director, CDL

What’s Happening in Collections: 15 Triumphs in 30 Minutes, Wendy Parfrey, Shared Content Coordinator

User Experience Design and CDL, Rachael Hu, User Experience Design Manager

eScholarship: Supporting OA Scholarly Communication at UC, Catherine Mitchell, Director, Access& Publishing; Justin Gonder, eScholarship Product Manager; and Katie Fortney, Copyright Policy & Education Officer

HathiTrust and Mass Digitization, Heather Christenson, Mass Digitization Project Manager

Each of the one-hour recordings, along with PowerPoint slides, is available for your viewing at: http://www.cdlib.org/groups/users_council/

(The presentations are password protected because some of the information is not for public consumption.)

The UC Berkeley Law Library records now appear In Melvyl as part of the UC Berkeley Libraries collection (Level 1) for UC Berkeley. Berkeley Law is an affiliated library on the Berkeley campus. Records appear as part of the University of California Libraries (Level 2) for all the other campuses. Previously, they only appeared as part of Libraries Worldwide (Level 3) where they continue to be represented as well. The addition of these records to UC holdings is a result of the UC Berkeley Law Library’s completion of its OCLC batch loading project to link OCLC numbers to their records, and additional work completed by the CDL and OCLC.

The UC Berkeley Law Library is not a participant in UC’s Request (Interlibrary Loan) service, so items will not be loaned from this collection.

Welcome, Berkeley Law!

In fall 2012, members of the CDL WorldCat Local Operations Team completed a preliminary investigation of the WorldCat Local Knowledgebase (WCL KB). The result of the analysis was a decision not to implement the WCL KB at this time. The Melvyl Advisory Group endorsed this decision in December 2012.

What is the WCL KB?
The WCL KB combines data about the library’s electronic resources and linking features that enable access to the content and help manage the workflows associated with these materials. Melvyl currently uses the UC-eLinks Knowledgebase for linking.

Why ‘not quite yet’?
The effort for the campuses and CDL to implement and maintain the WCL KB would be substantial, and the features important to the University of California libraries that depend on the WCL KB are still fairly immature or have functioning solutions already in place.

The CDL team is continuing to monitor developments in tools that would make it easier to populate and maintain the WCL KB, and they are observing the experience of peer institutions. Finally, the team will encourage vendors to work together to facilitate data sharing between systems such as Ex Libris’ SFX and Serials Solutions.

Read the full report on the CDL website: http://www.cdlib.org/services/d2d/melvyl/policies/wcl_kb_analysis_dec2012_final.pdf

Melvyl Users will have access to yet more resources as of January 2013 with the addition of several new databases to the Central Index. As was reported earlier, CDL will include databases that OCLC has added to its Central Index in the previous six months on a twice yearly basis: in June/July and December/January.

The new databases include:

JSTOR/Ithaka Arts & Sciences I

JSTOR/Ithaka Arts & Sciences II

JSTOR/Ithaka Arts & Sciences III

Taylor and Francis Journals

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers ASABE Technical Library

U.S. Government Printing Office GPO Monthly Catalog

The following FirstSearch databases, which are migrating to EBSCO, will be removed from the Central Index:

Anthropology Plus

FRANCIS

Chicano

The next round of new resources will be included in early summer.

You may have wondered why records for items held at the Center for Research Libraries (CRL), located in Chicago, show up under Level 2 with the University of California Libraries holdings in Melvyl; see below.

There are several reasons for this. First, nine UC campus libraries are members of CRL. UC has a substantial investment in CRL and in making CRL’s rare, unique and little known items highly visible and available to our researchers.

The UC libraries deposit collections to be stored and preserved at CRL for the use of researchers worldwide.

At the time of the transition from Ex Libris Melvyl to WorldCat Local, a policy decision was made to include CRL’s records as part of UC because of our long and active relationship with CRL. The decision was endorsed by the UC Heads of Public Services (HOPS) and the UC Collection Development Committee (CDC).

CRL records have displayed prominently in Melvyl as long as UC libraries have been members, and through pre-WorldCat Local versions of Melvyl. CRL records were added as a part of UC’s holdings in WorldCat Local in April of 2011. Trends in CRL usage by UC library users after that date show a marked increase in usage for requests, filled requests, and digital downloads.

So when you see Center for Research Libraries displaying under University of California Libraries, it is intentional and not an error. We have added this information to the Melvyl FAQ.

These will be handled by CDL on behalf of the campuses, and are in preparation for the upcoming merge of the FirstSearch WorldCat and WorldCat Local interfaces.

Prepending Proxy URL Information to LHR Links

You can now prepend your proxy authentication URL to links from your LHRs, making it easier for off- campus users to be routed directly to your proxy servers when necessary. Please share this information with Library Proxy Liaisons. To request activation of this feature, please send email to MelvylOps@cdlib.org

Service Config Language Options

These will not be changing.

Italian Translation

For all you Italian lovers, the Melvyl interface now includes the ability to select Italiano as the display language for labels. Selecting the language to display labels is available from the bottom of the screen.

Handling of Secured Images

CDL is deferring this change for the moment.

DOI Link Display Location

The DOI links now display in the Details section of the detailed record. Note the label “DOI” followed by the DOI value, e.g., for OCLC number 752298037.

New Databases

As was reported earlier, any new database content released to WorldCat Local’s Central Index will be added to Melvyl by CDL on behalf of the UC libraries twice a year: in June/July and December/January. In January 2013, CDL will send out a list of new databases added to Melvyl’s Central Index.

Are you curious about what the future looks like for Melvyl, resource sharing (ILL), and FirstSearch WorldCat?

Join us for a UC- only OCLC webinar, “Transforming Discovery and Resource Sharing with OCLC: FirstSearch, WorldCat Resource Sharing and More.” The webinar will provide an opportunity for a focused conversation with two senior managers at OCLC.

Mindy Pozenel, Director, OCLC WorldCat Discovery Services, and Katie Birch, Portfolio Director, OCLC Delivery Services, will tell us about the new services from OCLC that provide opportunities to create and share at Webscale.

Built on the OCLC WorldShare Platform, OCLC WorldShare Interlibrary Loan will replace WorldCat Resource Sharing and help library staff and users quickly and easily obtain the resources they need from libraries worldwide. Plus, new discovery features in WorldCat.org and WorldCat Local give staff the expert features they require.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, September 20 at 11:00 – 12:00 PDT.

Here’s how to join the conversation:
