Here’s an excellent and easy opportunity to broaden your knowledge of some of the projects CDL and the campuses are working on.

CDL recently hosted a webinar series for Users Council that’s now widely available to UC staff. (The CDL’s Users Council is a group responsible for communicating information between the CDL and the campuses concerning use of CDL tools, services and collections. Users Council consists of a liaison from each UC campus, including LBNL, LLNL and the Regional Library Facilities. A CDL representative is an ex officio member. )

The topics covered were chosen through a member survey, with survey expertise provided by CDL’s Senior Assessment Analyst Jane Lee.

This year there were six lively sessions covering the following ground:

Melvyl: A Snapshot of Issues, Patricia Martin, Director, Discovery & Delivery and Lena Zentall, Project Manager, Discovery & Delivery

Services Today & Tomorrow, Laine Farley, Executive Director, CDL

What’s Happening in Collections: 15 Triumphs in 30 Minutes, Wendy Parfrey, Shared Content Coordinator

User Experience Design and CDL, Rachael Hu, User Experience Design Manager

eScholarship: Supporting OA Scholarly Communication at UC, Catherine Mitchell, Director, Access& Publishing; Justin Gonder, eScholarship Product Manager; and Katie Fortney, Copyright Policy & Education Officer

HathiTrust and Mass Digitization, Heather Christenson, Mass Digitization Project Manager

Each of the one-hour recordings, along with PowerPoint slides, is available for your viewing at: http://www.cdlib.org/groups/users_council/

(The presentations are password protected because some of the information is not for public consumption.)

Melvyl Users will have access to yet more resources as of January 2013 with the addition of several new databases to the Central Index. As was reported earlier, CDL will include databases that OCLC has added to its Central Index in the previous six months on a twice yearly basis: in June/July and December/January.

The new databases include:

JSTOR/Ithaka Arts & Sciences I

JSTOR/Ithaka Arts & Sciences II

JSTOR/Ithaka Arts & Sciences III

JSTOR/Ithaka Arts & Sciences IV

Taylor and Francis Journals

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers ASABE Technical Library

The following FirstSearch databases, which are migrating to EBSCO, will be removed from the Central Index:

Anthropology Plus

FRANCIS

Chicano

The next round of new resources will be included in early summer.

In April 2012, CDL and the campuses conducted usability testing on two features in Melvyl – View Now and Central Index. The recommendations and full report are available at: http://www.cdlib.org/services/uxdesign/reports/index.html.

As a result of the assessment and further follow-up, investigation, and discussion, decisions were made that are now ready to be implemented immediately.

View Now

It was recommended that View Now be turned on only for the HathiTrust materials. This is because we know users will be successful in going directly to the full text item on the HathiTrust platform in almost all instances when the HathiTrust item is in the public domain.

In further discussions, HOPS requested that the “.gov/.edu” sites also be turned on. CDL did additional testing and determined that in a vast majority of cases, these items were also successful in resolving to full text, so we will be turning on .gov/.edu items as well as HathiTrust items.

Other services examined in pre-testing and testing (Internet Archive/Project Gutenberg and the WorldCat Digital Gateway) will not have the View Now feature turned on at this time because the path to retrieving these items results in a negative user experience.

Central Index

The report recommended turning on the Central Index feature, which is maintained by CDL. We have developed the following guidelines for managing the service:

CDL will turn on databases in the Central Index that are subscribed by all 10 UC campuses. This makes it workable to keep the databases in sync and results in a minimum of confusion for users. If one campus pulls out of a 10-campus license, CDL will remove that content from the Central Index for all campuses. We will notify the campuses if this occurs.

CDL will add databases to the Central Index (those which OCLC has added in the previous six months) two times each year: in June/July and December/January. CDL will use the master list in OCLC’s service configuration tool because it indicates when resources are actually activated, as opposed to OCLC’s spreadsheet, which includes pre-activation information. CDL does not have control of some content that OCLC adds to or deletes from the Central Index. CDL also does not control when a change in vendors causes additions or deletions to the Central Index.

CDL will not provide access to databases that are available only via Z39.50 because this method negatively impacts performance and the user experience.

What’s next?

As a result of the View Now and Central Index assessment report, thirteen new resources will be activated this summer. These include:

Alexander Street Press, Civil War Letters and Diaries

Alexander Street Press, Latino Literature

Alexander Street Press, North American Women’s Letters and Diaries

Alexander Street Press, Sixties Primary Documents and Personal Narratives 1960-1974

Alexander Street Press Scottish Women Poets of the Romantic Period

Cambridge University Press Historical Statistics of the United States

Institute of Physics eJournals and Archive

OECD iLibrary

Oxford University Press Oxford Art Online

Oxford University Press Oxford Music Online

ProQuest Gerritsen Collection of Women’s History, 1543-1945

Royal Society of Chemistry journals

S. Karger journals

Note: In the case of journal packages where the UC Libraries do not subscribe to the complete title list of the resource, all of the journal titles may appear in a result set. Users will discover that the full text is not available when the UC-eLinks menu does not display a full text link or when the WCL full text link in the detailed record leads only to an abstract page.

Some journal packages in WorldCat Local (WCL) are part of the Central Index and are activated by UC, such as Institute of Physics eJournals and Archive, the Royal Society of Chemistry journals and the S. Karger journals, and these will appear in the faceted database list with all the Central Index databases. Other journal packages are under the control of OCLC, such as Elsevier and Springer, and these do not appear in the faceted database list.

CDL will monitor the feedbacks and if this decision appears to create problems for users, we will reevaluate it.

What will be removed?

Several OCLC databases (previously hosted by RLG) are moving to the vendor EBSCO. As a result, their content will be deleted from the Central Index because they will now only be available via Z39.50. The list includes:

Anthropological Index

Anthropological Literature

Anthropology Plus

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals

Chicano Database

FRANCIS

Index to 19th-Century American Art Periodicals

Russian Academy of Sciences Bibliographies

Stay tuned

CDL will continue to scan the environment and review these decisions on a regular basis. We thank all of those involved in the initial testing, assessment with users, and follow-up processes that have led to our moving forward with what we hope will be positive results for our users.

Enhancements to the user experience in Melvyl were recently implemented by OCLC and officially rolled out during OCLC’s Sunday, August 5 install. All improvements are listed in detail in the attached PDF. (There are some items that do not apply to the UC libraries’ versions of Melvyl because they refer to features that UC has not yet turned on, or work slightly differently in our versions. Features that are not currently turned on for UC may be added in the future.)

Emailing of Search Results Problem

The problem of emailing an item from the detailed search results page to an email address has been resolved. In the past, this feature was becoming unreliable where search results selected for emailing would not arrive to the intended email address provided. This problem has been fixed.

General Performance Enhancements

In addition, several performance enhancements were introduced. These improvements are primarily ‘behind the scenes’ but overall, users should see improved response times for displaying search results and the loading of web pages in general.

As of today, July 30, 2012, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBL in the catalog) bibliographic records were added to UC Berkeley’s local OPAC, Oskicat (http://oskicat.berkeley.edu/) and will now also appear in Melvyl under the holdings for UC Berkeley. Examples of LBL records are OCLC numbers 645155708 (owned by LBL but not UC Berkeley) and 25708658 (owned by both LBL and Berkeley). LBL researchers will now use REQUEST for Interlibrary Loan instead of their local ILL system.

There may be some LBL bibliographic or item records that may look a bit different. LBL’s catalog and local practices are different from Berkeley’s, and while items added in the future will be handled according to UCB conventions and policies, users may run across migrated records that look different. Retrospective cleanup is not planned.

Thanks to all at UCB, LBL and CDL who contributed to the successful completion of this project.

UC librarians Sherri Berger (CDL), Lynn Jones (UCB) and Ellen Meltzer (CDL) have contributed a chapter to Past or Portal? Enhancing Undergraduate Learning through Special Collections and Archives, edited by Eleanor Mitchell, Peggy Seiden, and Suzy Taraba. Their chapter, also deposited in the open access eScholarship Repository, is entitled “’The Links in the Chain’: Connecting Undergraduates with Primary Source Materials at the University of California”. It describes undergraduate usage of archive and special collections mainly at UC Berkeley’s Bancroft Library, often using OAC for discovery. The article also explores instruction in a lower division gateway history class and the UC Berkeley Prize for Undergraduate Research as significant factors in encouraging undergraduate usage of special collections.

The new and current platforms of CDL-licensed ProQuest databases will run in parallel, beginning the week of May 6. ProQuest currently encompasses resources on the ProQuest, CSA and Chadwyck-Healy (ChH) platforms, as well as related products such as Lexis-Nexis Congressional (ProQuest Congressional), Factiva, Safari, Serials Solutions and Ulrichs.

The overlap period for locally licensed and systemwide licensed resources is intended to begin the week of May 6, with a full transition to the new platform for these resources on August 1. The August 1 date is tentative, dependent on the resolution of outstanding technical issues that affect off-campus access at UCD, UCI, UCR and UCSF. CDL has been working closely with these campuses to resolve the connectivity issues. The overlap access period allows users and library staff to allow for gaining familiarity and experience with the new platform while having the legacy platform available as needed.

A link to a list of the CDL-licensed ProQuest databases is below. (Your campus may have additional databases from ProQuest not included here, which will also be transitioned when the systemwide databases are transitioned in August.) The PIDs for the CDL-licensed databases will be updated to go to an interim screen where users can choose between the legacy and new versions of the databases. The interim pages also provide a space for detailed information and caveats regarding access to the new platform.

When the transition is complete, the PIDs will be directed to the new platform.

A full list of the databases with their PIDs as well as additional information is available at:

Training Materials for the New ProQuest Interface

ProQuest has a rich array of training materials for their new interface. For the bulk of materials, go to

http://proquest.com/go/training

The materials range from links to YouTube tutorials, Quick Start Reference Overview, user guides, posters, table tents and more. (Ignore the links on the upper left hand corner and focus on the links in the middle of the page.) Some training materials are available in multiple languages, so if you’re an English language speaker, make sure you choose one in English.

ProQuest has also created a number of LibGuides for their resources, available at

http://proquest.libguides.com/

On the LibGuides Web pages, you can find guides to specific databases, links to live Webinars and recordings, as well as screencasts and tutorials.

UC’s ProQuest Trainer Aimee Leverette has already or will be contacting the campus libraries to conduct in-person training sessions. Stay tuned for more information on face-to-face training.
