Recent Enhancements, News, and Activities

For the 3rd month in a row, EZID Clients captured top honors when DataCite’s Managing Director Jan Brase blogged about the “most popular datasets” using DataCite Statistics. March numbers showed that 9 of the 10 most popular were EZID clients. Congratulations! http://bit.ly/ZlFYNy

On April 15th DataCite registration services were down for approximately 16 hours, starting at 8:25 AM, Pacific Time. EZID was not down during this time, but because it relies on DataCite to implement its DOI-related operations, DOI registrations through EZID were not possible during this window. DOI resolutions are handled by an entirely different system and were never affected. ARK services were not affected either. The cause of this outage has not yet been completely explained.

In response, we have developed tools to detect, recover from, and otherwise manage both client mistakes and DataCite and Handle System failures. This helps ensure more consistent system performance for all EZID clients.

EZID Partners and Clients
Our current EZID clients include academic institutions, government agencies, non-profit organizations and commercial entities.

EZID Service Description
EZID (easy-eye-dee) is a production service that gives researchers the ability to create and manage long-term identifiers so that they can to track usage, get credit for their work, share their data, and have the data reused for additional research. As a result, EZID identifiers also make it possible to increase citations, to build on previous work, to conduct new research, and avoid duplicating previous efforts.

Along with Robert Kahn and Jan Brase, EZID lead architect John Kunze was invited to present his views on dataset identifiers in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the launch of the Research Data Alliance, an organisation that aims to accelerate and facilitate research data sharing and exchange. As a result, EZID’s scheme-agnostic N2T resolver is being considered as a candidate system for worldwide persistent identifier resolution of scientific data.

Recent Enhancements, News, and Activities

DataCite’s Managing Director Jan Brase blogged this month about the “11 most popular datasets” using DataCite Statistics. EZID Clients were 9 out of the 11. Congratulations! http://bit.ly/YGEufT

EZID currently holds approximately a half million identifiers. Based on conversations with several clients that require much larger numbers of identifiers (in the multiple millions), the EZID development team has been scaling up EZID’s infrastructure and adding new functionality. These features will allow the upload and download of large batches of identifiers.

The development team has also been improving the efficiency of the user account setup process and refining our data center naming practices to improve clients’ ability to track identifier usage.

EZID Partners and Clients
Our current EZID clients include academic institutions, government agencies, non-profit organizations and a commercial entity. Bolded entries are new additions since our last update.

I was very pleased by the nice recognition from Library of Congress’s “Top Ten Digital Preservation Developments of 2012” of three projects CDL has been involved in:

The DataUp Project. The University of California Curation Center at the California Digital Library continued to produce useful tools and services in support of digital preservation with DataUp, “an open source tool helping researchers document, manage, and archive their tabular data… within the scientist’s workflow.”

End of Term Web Archive. The End of Term 2012 project got underway to capture U.S. Government websites between the first and second administration of President Barack Obama. Project partners include the California Digital Library, Internet Archive, Library of Congress, University of North Texas Libraries and the U.S. Government Printing Office.

We have also been participating through meetings and briefings in the development of another project on the list, the Digital Preservation Network.

The rest of this “Top Ten” list is equally impressive and it is heartening to realize that so much has been accomplished in the area of digital preservation in our community. Yet I can’t help but note that it can still be a hard sell to administrators to justify new or increased expenditures for something that seems abstract, unpredictable and never ending. This challenge was magnified for me recently when I presented a paper in December, 2012 at the 3rd conference on Cultural Heritage online – Trusted Digital Repositories & Trusted Professionals in Florence, Italy.

The conference began with a parade of local officials and cultural heritage ministers from the city and region, all extolling the importance of preserving cultural heritage in the digital age. Indeed, the commitment to preservation is everywhere in this city that was the heart of the Renaissance, its museums and public places overflowing with the riches of the past. I was particularly struck by the exhibits at the Galileo Museum

Sundials, Galileo Museum, Florence

where the artifacts and experimental documentation of not only Galileo but also his contemporaries were showcased in spectacular fashion. Even with all of the support given to cultural heritage, the Italians at the conference still feel they need to shore up digital preservation, but they were focusing on standards and compliance more than on basic funding.

My presentation, on the other hand, was about how we have shifted from talking about preservation as an ultimate and costly activity to curation as part of the ongoing process of creating and managing digital content. We must be aware of incentives—such as mandates from funders and publishers rather than government initiatives–for our researchers to practice good stewardship of their research output. Thus we have invested in tools such as the DataUP mentioned by LC as well as the Data Management Planning Tool (DMPTool which made the 2011 Top Ten list), EZID (which won the DataCite 2012 Gold Award for assigning more than 250,000 DOIs (digital object identifiers) in one year), and the Web Archiving Service to make it digital content easier to manage when it comes time to preserve it for the future. After all, today’s research can become tomorrow’s cultural heritage and think what we would be missing if we weren’t able to see what Galileo was up to.

Recent Enhancements, News, and Activities

At DataCite’s General Assembly meeting this year in Cologne, EZID was honored with the 2012 Gold Award for assigning more than 250,000 DOIs (digital object identifiers) in one year. This reflects EZID’s growth in 2012, as well as the hard work of our clients and the team here at California Digital Library. More information is available here.

On Sunday, December 2, we implemented metadata requirements for DOIs. These mirror the DataCite requirements that were to go into effect as of 12/31/12. During the month of November, clients had the opportunity to test the upcoming changes in the EZID staging environment and the EZID team provided support for large and/or complicated metadata changes.

EZID Service Manager Joan Starr and other University of California Curation Center (UC3) colleagues held two 2-day workshops Nov 8-9 in Oakland and Nov 13-14 in Irvine. The workshops introduced library staff to basic data curation concepts, presented the challenges and solutions involved in delivering data curation services, provided information about UC3’s tools and services, and shared campus solutions and approaches to data curation services. 100 participants attended the workshops.

At DataCite‘s General Assembly meeting this year in Cologne, EZID was honored with the 2012 Gold Award for assigning more than 250,000 DOIs (digital object identifiers) in one year. This reflects EZID’s growth in 2012, as well as the hard work of our clients and the team here at California Digital Library.

Thanks go to all who contributed to this achievement: John Kunze, Greg Janée, Scott Fisher and Trisha Cruse, as well as our many clients.

For those interested in the topic of data citation, take note of DataCite’s Stats service. Here you can examine the DOI-assignment activities of all the DataCite member organizations and follow the growth of this young organization. The statistics can be viewed all the way down to the prefix level, which means you can look at what is going on with organizations in Europe, Australia, Canada, and so forth.

Assigning long-term identifiers to data is a practice that is on the rise, and we are happy to be part of this trend.

September & October Activities

We conducted an identifier clean-up exercise and were able to reduce substantially the incidence of broken and bad links. To all who assisted, we are thankful for your participation in the effort to insure identifier quality.

We announced that DataCite would implement the policy of requiring metadata for DOIs as of 12/31/12. EZID will make our DOI registration code conform to the new procedures starting Sunday, December 2nd, 2012. Our API and UI changes will be available for testing in mid November.

We tightened up the EZID system with several changes and improvements in the back end. One outcome is a substantial performance improvement in the ARK identifier minting process.

The DOI registration service encountered three brief interruptions in October due to problems with DataCite’s service center; however the resolution service itself was never affected. DataCite is working with the service provider to address needed appropriate long term infrastructure upgrades.

EZID Service Manager Joan Starr and a group of other CDL and University of California (UC) campus colleagues had a paper published on data management services, available here: http://escholarship.umassmed.edu/jeslib/vol1/iss2/7/.

August Activities

Service Manager Joan Starr held a webinar on August 15th attended by more than 100 participants from organizations all over the country. The webinar was recorded, and the audio and slides are both available on the EZID outreach page, http://n2t.net/ezid/home/outreach.

We finalized an exciting new partnership with EDINA, a UK national academic data center based at the University of Edinburgh, and JISC, one of the UK’s major information and digital technologies project sponsors. A key outcome is the establishment of a live replica for the ARK resolver in the UK. We are very pleased about this development, as it means an increase in service reliability and infrastructure robustness. For more information, see: http://www.cdlib.org/cdlinfo/2012/09/04/announcing-ezid-uk/.

July Activities

EZID added support for an additional DataCite metadata element, resourceType. This is similar to the Dublin Core Format element, and it will become a required by DataCite in the next few months. We decided to help users prepare now for this by introducing support into our API and the user interface. The API documentation and tooltips now include information about this element (http://n2t.net/ezid/doc/apidoc.html#profile-datacite).

Lead Architect John Kunze announced the forming of an ARK identifier discussion group. The group is intended as a public forum for people interested in sharing with and learning from others about how ARKs have been or could be used in identifier applications. Anyone interested can join at http://groups.google.com/group/arks-forum.

Service Description
EZID (easy-eye-dee) is a production service that gives researchers the ability to create and manage long-term identifiers so that they can to track usage, get credit for their work, share their data, and have the data reused for additional research. As a result, EZID identifiers also make it possible to increase citations, to build on previous work, to conduct new research, and avoid duplicating previous efforts.

Additional EZID Information (training materials, guides, FAQ, etc)
More information about EZID is available by sending an inquiry to uc3@ucop.edu. See also EZID outreach and webinars: http://n2t.net/ezid/home/outreach.
