By Brian Quigley, UC Berkeley

Six campuses (Berkeley, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, and Santa Barbara) have purchased the LandScan 2011 Global Population Database. Produced by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), LandScan provides ambient population (24-hour average) data by country, admin1 unit (state/province), pixel (sq km), and custom area. Data is broken down by gender ratio and age group. Access is provided by East View Geospatial through the East View LandScan Global 2011 Web App at http://uclibs.org/PID/241791. Off-campus access is available through campus client VPN. Proxy server access has been unreliable or unconfirmed at most campuses, but it does work through the UC Berkeley proxy server.

For more advanced users, data can be downloaded from the Web App for use in GIS software. GIS users can also access the data directly through their GIS software using the Web Map Service (WMS) or Web Coverage Service (WCS), though this access has been spotty, especially off-campus:

WMS: http://wms.cartographic.com/GWS/services/LandScan2011/Dataset/mapserver/WMSServer

WCS: http://wms.cartographic.com/GWS/services/LandScan2011/Dataset/mapserver/WCSServer

Here is the fuller ORNL description of the database: “At approximately 1 km resolution (30″ X 30″), LandScan is the finest resolution global population distribution data available and represents an ambient population (average over 24 hours). The LandScan algorithm, an R&D 100 Award Winner, uses spatial data and imagery analysis technologies and a multi-variable dasymetric modeling approach to disaggregate census counts within an administrative boundary. Since no single population distribution model can account for the differences in spatial data availability, quality, scale, and accuracy as well as the differences in cultural settlement practices, LandScan population distribution models are tailored to match the data conditions and geographical nature of each individual country and region.” For more information, East View has an FAQ at http://www.eastview.com/online/faq_landscan.

Several campuses have selected to participate in a Tier 2 for an eBook collection from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

This collection, divided by imprint dates, has a front list consisting of 35 titles released from 2010-2012 which the seven following campuses will receive: Berkeley, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz. In addition, Merced will also obtain the 2007-2009 list of 27 titles and Berkeley will receive the full collection of 309 titles, including the backlist.

These books cover the following subject content: power and energy; computing & management; history of technology; electromagnetic waves; telecommunications; networks; radar, sonar and navigation; circuits, devices and systems and renewable energy. MARC records will soon be added to all holding libraries’ catalogs for each title. Simultaneous users can access a given title.

By Julia Gelfand, Resource Liaison and Applied Sciences & Engineering Librarian, UCI Libraries

Seven campuses (Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Santa Barbara, San Diego) are now participating in a Tier 2 negotiation for the ASTM Standards and Engineering Digital Library (SEDL) at http://enterprise.astm.org. ASTM, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of international voluntary consensus standards.

Today, some 12,200 active ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance safety, facilitate market access and trade, and build consumer confidence. In addition there are 28,500 historical and withdrawn standards, plus 12,300 Redlined Standards (PDF documents that provide change marks to compare the additions, deletions or other changes between an active standard and the prior version) included where revisions were made. There are nearly 100 categories of standards with the largest number in the categories of Construction, Metals, Nonferrous Metal Products, Paint & Related Coating, Petroleum, Lubricants & Fossil Fuels, Plastics, Environmental, Rubber, Steel, Textiles, Electrical Insulation and Electronics, Water & Environmental Technology, Nuclear, Solar and Geothermal Energy, General Methods & Instrumentation, and new areas that reflect 3D Imaging standards, Additive Manufacturing Standards, Medical Device Standards and Implant Standards among others. The standards are searchable by keyword or standard number and full text access to all standards in either PDF or HTML format can be retrieved.

The SEDL requires that all users click through and accepts the terms of the license. While ASTM is best known for its standards, SEDL also includes nearly every other ASTM publication, including 1500+ books and 60,000+ papers and chapters dating back to 1932.

In addition to the standards, three main collections of publications compose the books, journals and papers of the SEDL, and the CDL Shared Cataloging or SCP unit will be processing individual bibliographic records at the source level for the following content that will be noted in Melvyl and local opacs:

Peer reviewed conference proceedings/Special Technical Publications (STPs)

Journals – ASTM issues the following titles:

Geotechnical Testing Journal

Journal of Testing and Evaluation

Journal of ASTM International

Journal of Forensic Sciences Backfile from 972-2005

Journal of Cement, Concrete and Aggregates (CCA) – historical issues

Journal of Composites Technology and Research (JCTR) – historical issues

Manuals, Monographs and Data Series Library – basically an eBook collection

This is a major digital resource for the participating campuses. If you have any additional questions, please contact Julia Gelfand, Resource Liaison (jgelfand@uci.edu; 949-824-4971)

RISM (Répetoire International des Sources Musicales / International Inventory of Musical Sources) is now available though a free online catalog. The Bavarian State Library, the State Library of Berlin, and RISM collaborated to make this resource freely available. The online catalog gives access to the data of Series A/II: Music manuscripts after 1600 data which represents historical music resources from 32 countries representing approximately 700,000 references from 25,000 composers. The interface offers both basic and advanced search options. Results are sorted by composer and facets are available to refine search results by categories such as subject, scoring, and source type.

RISM, to date, has been available at UC libraries through the EBSCOhost interface. At the recommendation of the Music Bibliographers group, RISM has been made available solely from this free online catalog version. Search Options are available in German and English.
