Was it clear/obvious how to link to various services offered by SFX (please explain)?
hhh
No, but UClinks ins't bad as a phrase to teach
Yes.
No. There is no reason to assume that users will know to click on UCLinks to get to the various Melvyl and/or Full-Text options. These links should appear in the brief/long record displays perhaps right below the source field.
I was not able to access the UC links.
yes
Yes. No problem finding full-text article, although several steps were involved.
Looking at the record in CSA, there were only 2 options (View Record and UCLinks). It wasn't obvious although the UC in UCLinks did give me a clue.
Yes - - this works similarly to how CSA is currently working under ERIC but with fewer, simpler choices and with the box to click on being more readily visible once we leave CSA.
The only problem I had was that at first it looked as though I was meant to be able to go straight to Melvyl from the small "UC Links" screen, but when I hovered my mouse, it stayed an arrow and never became a hand, so I assumed there was no link. I opened my own Melvyl window, and searched the journal myself. I went back and figured it out--I assumed that you must somehow be able to go straight to Melvyl since the survey instructions said to go there. If I were you, I would make that button more obviously a link.
yes
No. It is not obvious that the icon in front of the "See if your campus has this. Check the Melvyl Catalog" is a hot link to click on.
On the CSA screen the UC link is quite far to the right. Perhaps it's an artifact of the frames in this test. Once I clicked on UCLink, the SFX screen is nice. The click through to JSTOR is interesting. Since the box was filled in with volume/page, I expected that I'd be taken right to it. Instead, I was dumped into the journal main page. Luckily, however, it opened in another window, so I could see the SFX citation alongside, once I moved the windows around. Same thing with "your library may own this" It gets me into the PE entry for the journal as a whole. So instead of going from most specific to most specific, I'm taken from specific (article) to general (the journal level) This is not very different than having to open up a new window and look it up. It saves typing, but that's about it. ----- I did another search on "cross cultural marriage" The SFX window only gave me the choice of searching Melvyl. That was clear and obvious. UCR had the journal. Oh yes, As I recall, the citation didn't come up in the box. It was only the link to melvyl choice.
It was pretty obvious, although I think a really novice user might not have known to click on the "S"
Yes, although I assumed that the highlighted words "Melvyl Catalog" were links to click (See if your campus has this. Check the Melvyl Catalog) for checking catalog holdings. Instead, the only link was the icon. It might be helpful to have more than one access point to click on.
Yes, although possibly "UClinks" should be in larger type.
No, it was not obvious that I could click on either of those options and get the information stated. If it said something like "Get full text available from JSTOR" and "View here to see if your campus has this." it would be more clear that we could select something and get something.
It was clear once you clicked on "UCLinks." I feel that that link is too off to the side and not descriptive enough to let patrons know what they'll get when they click on it. Something larger and more eye-catching whould be better, perhaps with some pop-up text that explains just what it is when you put your mouse pointer over it.
Yes, although in my searches there was only one service offered - check Melvyl
yes
The search page has a lot of options! Too busy looking, and it's not obvious that you need to choose a database, as well as a search type. On the other hand, the options given make it possible to do a very precise search.
I did not think it was obvious.
UC links are good. However in SFX pop up window it is not at all obvious that you click on the "s" to get to you source.
"UC Links" message in CSA was clear. The icon in the SFX window is not particularly clear for the first time user, but once a user has tried it once, repeat users should not have a problem.
Not really. I am staff at UCSC, and work the Ref Desk and run the local document delivery service. "View Record" and "UC Links" could be confused. Perhaps "View Full Citation" or "View Full Bibliographic Record" would be clearer. "UC Links" opened up at least 3 more windows before I actually saw the article. JSTOR is awful. It took 5 open windows and I had to select the discipline or journal title before it would proceed, and so I had to keep jumping between screens. And cut & paste and "find in page" were not available either.
yes, although it was not clear that I would be able to link to full text when clicking on UC links.
The term UClinks is a little confusing but I can't think of a better term that will encompass all SFX services.
Yes. The UCLinks text is good. I would be concerned that the student might assume it will *always* link to the full text.
Not clear that the UC Links = S Not sure where to click on "S" or See if you.. or Melvyl Catalog
The "UC Links" was clear, though not visible easily at first glance.
Language on SFX interim screen seems clear and straightforward.
Yes, but when I went to JSTOR for the article, it did not bring me to the exact issue. I had to brwose through the volumes to get to the article on fertitlity. Wuth GALE, it brought me right to the specific article, which is much better!
Yes, but no priority given - for example, we linked to "does your campus own this" before linking to "full text." Can Full text be in bold or red or something to draw you away from "your campus" - to catch your eye..
yes
No, but I think we can get away with publicizing the UC Links link.
It was clear to me because I knew what I was looking for, so I clicked on 'UC Links.' But for someone unfamiliar with the capabilities, I think something more explanatory would help: 'Find the Article' or something like that.
Not initially. I'm pretty intuitive when it comes to figuring out how to use database websites, but it wasn't clear to me at the very beginning that you had to click on UC Links to see both full text and what was available at your campus. I figured it out, but this is not clear just by looking at the interface. One would have to go into help or play around to discover this.
For our campus, we would have to indicate UC links meant seeking holdings for our SB campus.
Not really. There's nothing else to click. I moused over and saw it was a link. It might be easier if the choices are just normal underscored hyperlinks.
It was clear on how to link to View Text or go to UC Link. I was searching Psyc
It is not obvious that the swirly S logo is a clickable link. Not thrilled with "UCLinks". How about: links@UC or sfx/linking or LinkSFX
The UCLinks buttons seems fairly clear, but I'm used to looking in the same spot for Locate Document.
Since I had been taken so close, why not take me directly to the jstor document text unless my campus is not a jstor campus; in that case, automatically see if it's at my campus; if no match, do ILL. (option 2)
I think it was clear. It is a bit similar to what we now have except that the SFX box is smaller and you sort of see what you need to do more immediately.
Yes
the intermediate page from SFX is clearer than the current CDL intermediate page. But all the steps afterwards are as confusing as ever - I assume SFX was not supposed to address that? Listing both a link to MELVYL and a list to Request might confuse some people who think they can request it without checking whether or not their campus owns it
locator link easy to find
Yes, but probably because I was aware of the service already.
Yes - by using the UCLinks button first and then reading SFX screen and following SFX links.
No. Unlike CSA which has a UCLinks button and clicking that links to the SFX functions, the Gale one simply has an SFX button which will mean nothing to many people - who know that that will lead to full-text, locations, request?
Although it clearly says "see if your campus has this", I think students will be initially confused. Once they try it, they may figure it out. It will depend if they've ever seen a WebMelvyl screen before.
Within the SFX window, only the "S" logo buttons serve as links to resources. It's problematic that (in Netcape at least) the cursor doesn't change to a pointing hand when moved over these, as it usually does with images used as links. It's also problematic that the bold face text given for the link (e.g., "Melvyl Catalog/Periodicals") doesn't work as a link. As a result, the user has no indication of how to follow these links unless he/she actually puts the cursor on the "S" logo and clicks. So, I would say this is not clear.
Yes
yes was testing ERIC via CSA
The UC e-Links label was clearly visible for each citation, but it was not obvious what it meant until you clicked on it (i.e. no explanatory text). However, that may be a training issue more than a design issue.
fairly clear. But if we have the electronic journal, it should link at the article level. This was the biggest shortcoming I found. It did link to the article level for one journal I found (Nurse Education Today) but the second one I tried did not. See next section for details.
Yes, fairly clear to navigate once I got the hang of it.
If I hadn't been told that clicking on UC-e-Links was the way to find the article/journal, I could probably have figured it out.
no. I don't think patrons will know what uc elinks mean.
No it is a confusion of intials and funny boxes that are difficult to figure out
Yes
Yes, it was obvious.
yes
Fairly Clear -- the UC ELinks link is a bit small. I like that it shows up on the view record screen.
yes and no. The screens come up in frames and they are very small and it was hard to see what was in them as there was no scroll bar. Once I found he UCe-links link, it was easier from there. However, even the Request box came up small and HELP covered Create profile, so it was very confusing and hard to tell what to do. I placed the request with my profile off because I could not see the sign in link and create profile link until after I placed my request. It would be better if the boxes came up in full screen so the patrons can see all the pertinent information.
It was easy to find the UC-eLinks link. It would be nice if the link were a "UC-eLink" button.
Yes. It was obvious when to link either to full text or the catalog
Yes. I recognized that the software was there to help me link to holdings or holdings information.

no links to several UCSB online journals, but I perhaps that's the fault of our cataloging. But one was a CDL wide (Muse, Social Forces, a 2001 article).
none.
none
The computer did not connect to the UC links.
none really
Two problems: 1) Basic search okay as long as one selects the correct choice between phrase, any of the words, all of the words. However, advanced search needing boolean operators not obvious without user going to building search strategy. An eg under kw search choice that indicates something like: "boolean operators needed if not searching as phrase" might increase searching success. I don't think most users would choose "Build your search strategy" first.
I liked the SFX menu screen. However, I found it somewhat misleading that the SFX menu screen very clearly indicated the article ciation. Then when I clicked on the Full Text (SFX) button, it didn't take me to the article, but to the JSTOR search engine for that journal (which is pretty user-unfriendly). It just seemed that if the citation info was there, and a full text link was there...I should have been able to go straight to the article text.
none
Sometimes, links didn't work. I clicked the links and nothing was happened.
None other than the above.
The type face in infinitesimally small, in Netscape 4.7, even when I tried to increase the font size. The type face is very small the SFX screen. It looks like 8 point or less--Barely visible to my middle-aged eyes. I will try it in IE when I check out Gale.
I was surprised to get to the PE results screen and have to click on display to see the actual records. Again, I think a novice user might not have know what to do to see the actual holdings.
When I clicked on the link to the full-text article, I was taken to the journal home page (at JSTOR) rather than directly to the article (Family Planning Perspectives, 1992, 24, 4, July-Aug, 162-167,171). This may be confusing to a user who is expecting to be linking directly to full-text.
I got 0 results when I tried the sample search.
"All of the words" should be listed BEFORE "Any of the words." (this is the list of 'exact phrase,' 'any of the words', 'all of the words' that appears right underneath the pulldown menu for keyword/author/title.
See above.
When clicking to get to the JSTOR full text, it took you to the journal home page but not the article--sure would be nice if it took you right to the article. When you click to get to campus holdings on Melvyl, it takes you to a browse screen where you have to click "display" to view the results; taking the user right to the results would be better. Also, my campus's holdings didn't automatically display, I had to make another click to get them.
None. However, I do note inconsistency in naming that I'm sure you're aware of - CSA uses "UCLinks," the banner of the SFX window says "SFX-UC," and the credits line of that window says "UC Links is an initiative..."
none
It would be nice if the volume information crossed over when linking to the outside journal site.
Considerable difficulty deciding, in the case of JSTOR, whether to add the name of journal, and if so, where to place it in their categories. There is not a search category for journal title. In the case of Futuribles, it would probably take a ref librarian to interpret the holdings information for a patron, but this has less to do with SFX i think than it does the nature of the journal.
1. doesn't link to the indivisual article in JSTOR titles 2. Doesn't bring up UCI as a default for holdings so you need to futher limit or look for UCI letters. 3. Imposible to tell from within CSA whether UCi has access to a title without clicking through 2 more windows.
I was expecting the JSTOR link from the Italy article to take me to the full text of the journal article, not to the top of the journal's site where I now have to browse to the article.
This was a very frustrating experience, even for an experienced searcher. So many open windows requuired, no cut & paste, no find command, so it took at least 10 minutes to get the full-text displayed for the first search. Gale is much smoother. when the JSTOR window opened to get to the full-text, I had to completely re-enter my search terms. This is way too many clicks. Gale did the search again for me. I would have to write the article title down or maneuver awkwardly between screens because no cut & paste was available.
Confusion if to expect full text or not
- It's not very obvious that the "S" icon is the link for the full text or holdings info. - It would be best if the full text links went directly to the article. If this is not possible, instructions for browsing through the journal Website would be helpful. - The source for dissertations linked under SFX is Dissertations Abstracts International. Is there a way to link to Digital Dissertations Website or search the MELVYL catalog for the actual dissertation title instead of DAI?
Linking to full text at article level, link was to whole journal.
Would have liked the link to full text to link directly to the article.
Having to search through the issues of J STOR to get to the article. It would bebetter if it went right to the issue searched.
UC links to JSTOR ; article not immediately available - but in Gale it was. Patron needs to search again and it's not immediately clear that that is what you need to do. Why can't it link directly as it does in Gale ?
none
There are too many steps: I would like to go directly to the text of the JSTOR article, rather than having to click thru various screens and then browse in JSTOR. If other options need to be offered, I think it would be better to offer them later in the process rather than make the user do so much work to get to the text. The goal here should be seamless linking, and this is far from seamless.
The SFX-UC box that pops up states the citation for your full-text on-line journal, but the link does not always go directly to the article. Sometimes (and especially in the example given), you're thrown into a table of contents or entry screen that requires you to click on several other links to get to the actual article. These windows cover previous windows that have the citation information on them, and by the time you get close to finding the article, you've forgotten the citation you're looking for. I had to search for and go back to the UC-SFX box to remind myself what article I was actually looking for in the example given. The links should go directly to the url where the article is (especially if it's a stable link) and/or the SFX-UC reference box should remain on top, or visible until you get to the article in cases where you have to click through multiple screens to get to your prize.
The journal title which was in french our library does not have a current subscription to -that is a difficulty
The full text link doesn't take me to the full text, but to the journal. On another search, the sfx took a while to pop up (>10 sec.). And I wasn't sure that the request feature knew which article I wanted. I suggest adding the citation to the top of the request page or something that lets the user know that the right article has been requested. On another search, I looked up a recent article in the journal _Sociology_ which is online. UClinks did not offer to take me to the full text.
The UC link linked me to the wrong title in the PE file. The article was in the International Journal of Psychiatry. I was linked to Communist Economies. This happened with two different articles from the same journal. When I tried to link to a SciDirect article, the connection was unsuccessful because "the format of the url was incorrect". This is a very long url and it was on several lines of different lengths when I clicked. My suggestion is to just have a "link to article" button with the actual url in one string and hidden from the searcher. These long urls are ugly and are a distraction when viewing the citation.
I realize you probably can't do anything about this yet, but it would be nice if the link went directly to the article not all issues.
The article on fertility took me to the journal, but I had to search the title again. That's not always very clear to undergrads. I assume there isn't a direct article link.
lots of small open screens roaming around, many labeled exactly the same, sfx b... sfx t... sfx... how do I tell them apart?
The many windows that get opened might be confusing to some today but everyone? will get with multiple windows eventually. The little "s"'s which you must click to actually get to the item are not apparently what you need to click on. Could the text to the right of those "s"'s be made the/a link? Also - the JSTOR example goes to the journal where you browse or search to the article. I noticed that for the journal "Sociological Practice" the system goes directly to the article. I suppose that is JSTOR's problem. Too bad.
Those cute orange S (for SFX?) buttons looked so much like a design feature that it didn't occur to me right away that I could click on them.
just the usual difficulties via CSA of having to open 5 windows to find something. Can't anything be done about that? It's especially unclear how to get to the full text of an article from the home page of something like JSTOR.
none
Only one - the link to the full-text of the article went to the table of contents for the journal rather than directly to the article.
None.
See above.
I searched CSA GeoRef. The way GeoRef is loaded by CSA predisposes SFX to problems. However, SFX works better than the current locating service implemented by CSA.
I knew how to find the SFX link in the CSA search results display, but for someone without this knowledge, it could be a problem with any of these vendor interfaces. A disctinctive, hopefully obvious name and/or graphic is needed, consistent across all vendors. "UCLinks" would be good, but I understand the conflict with the UCLINK mail system. Maybe we should use it anyway, though. Is anybody really going to think this goes to their e-mail? Just a thought ...

1. in UC-eLinks, must retype info to do search - search only asked for yr/vol/issue/pgs -- what about for document search? those don't have that info (ED's) so couldn't do that search from there in e*subscribe 2. would help if "see if your campus has this..." was an active link - as is, must close window and open another one to do that search when it opens a new window for me, i think that i'll be able to do the search from there, but you can't
The only difficulty had nothing to do with SFX. The library card information for UCLA under "more info" on the Request screen is incorrect.
e-Links does not always take you to the article level. This is really bad. I ran a search on "health education" and found an article in the American Journal of Public Health. The e-Links ran the search in the catalog, and showed our library as having the e-journal; however, that next link only took me to the main page, not to article level. Then I would have to run yet another search of the journal in order to get to the article. This is very time-consuming and will be very frustrating to our library patrons. Also, all the different windows popping open clutter the browser screen up, but I'm not sure if anything can be done about that.
The 3 windows were a bit confusing - but I see no way around this for purposes of this test site.
None. I like that separate windows opened, so that I could move back and forth as necessary.
the default search for csa is "exact phrase" -- should be "any" or "all words".
I had no idea how to enter searches or where to enter searches. The list of data bases gave me no idea of what to choose
Didn't catch keywords. Needed to be specific when typing search ie "Fertility in Italy and Spain"
When I attempted to access full text of the first article, Fertility in Italy and Spain, I was given a message (on the JSTOR page) that it couldn't be found. Since the issues of the Journal were provided on this page, I selected the appropriate issue and scanned the table of contents, and then found the article. I would be concerned that some students might stop at the point of the first message and not continue to search for the article.
Some searches took very long to load up. I could not see the full CSA screen and any time and the frames do not have scroll bars, so I could not see past the news and hot t links at the top (I assume that's Hot Topics), but can't say for sure. There needs to be a scroll bar to scroll over to the right. I'm not sure if this is due to the sfx test instructions on the left.
I think the first time I linked to the assigned title that it did not offer the full-text option. When I repeated the exercise it was there. (maybe I clicked on the wrong title but I don't think I did).

Clicking on the UC e-links button produces a 400--Bad Request error message whenever full text (I suspect) is availbel. For titles w/o full text, the e-links window comes up and the holdings search seems fine.
On one record the UC eLink returned a BAD REQUEST message.

no links to several UCSB online journals, but I perhaps that's the fault of our cataloging. But one was a CDL wide (Muse, Social Forces, a 2001 article).

The UC-eLinks window shows the jstor subscription to the source-- including displaying the vol and issue #'s in boxes. The link however only takes me to the source's list of available volumes in jstor, rather then calling up the correct issues TOC or the article itself.
The full text linked to a browse screen for the volume rather than for the issue. This resulted in several steps: 1. Search, 2. E-Links, 3. Volume browse, 4. Issue browse
just the above. Being able to link to the full-text before one has to go to PE is good.
I expected the link to JSTOR from the SFX window to go directly to the article. It did not. It took me to the publisher website.
From sample search A. The full-text link to the JSTOR article lists the last page [171] instead of the first page [162] in the UCLinks window. Also, the link does not take you to the article level only the journal level.
The keyword search gave zero results. I found the article by doing a title word search.

We work long and hard to explain to patrons that they will not find periodicals in the MELVYL Catalog. However, when I searched for the article Worsening demographic situation in France and checked UC holdings, I was given the message: "See if your campus has this. Check the MELVYL Catalog." It should say "Check the California Periodicals Database" because they aren't seardhing the MELVYL Catalog. Thanks.

Links for "Fertility in Italy and Spain: The Lowest in the World" took me to the publisher's page instead of full text article. | 1. GeoRef Rec no: 2001-017127. Ti: Longitudinal pipeline... This is a conf proceedings. Mel searched by ISBN, number in ISBN record appears to be garbage and SFX could not find. Problem w with the GeoRef record. However, SFX error message was "unknown index rather than "not found". 2. GeoRef rec: 2000-001462. Journal: Earthquake Eng & Eng Vibration. SFX searched on ISSN, couldn't find. Title IS in melvyl but without an issn and different chinese transliteration. However, is same journal. Don't think SFX could figure this out. 3. GeoRef accession no: 1998-03381. Ti: Evaluation of Cobalt Mobility ... This is a DOE technical report. SFX _said_ it was going to search it in the pe file, but searched it in the Mel file. Couldn't find because it used "monograph" as part of the title search string. We do have the report and it can be found by ti and by Rpt no. Katie Frohmberg Berkeley |
No, the actual SFX-ing worked fine, except that the full text link only got me as far as the journal issue page (right to the article would have been better)

Pub type: Empirical Study. (Check locations in CAT. For details, type EXPLAIN LOCATE.) I had the same problem when searching the author Bork, A.
