Was it clear/obvious how to link to various services offered by SFX (please explain)?

Took a second to find, but then it was obvious
Clear; one clicks on OpenLink(SFX) first; then on the yellow bordered SFX intermediary screen, one clicks on the fulltext choice
Not completely clear and no indication that you can get full-text of articles through OpneLink (SFX)
Again, the terms used, 'Open Link SFX' explains little, should at least be changed to Local Link SFX of some such thing.
NO
yes
yes
Not at all. I couldn't find any link that brought up SFX. I had already tried CSA where the UC-eLink was clear. But there was no sign of any such link on my listings (and I tried another search besides the test one).
It was pretty clear how to link.
no. it took me a while to figure out that I had to click on the arrow to get the full text from nature
The SFX link was obvious and it did take the user to the journal title needed.
It was fairly simple to follow instructions and get to the full text of articles (from OVID results in current contents search to text in Expanded Academic). I think all the windows might be a source of confusion to patrons. But it does work.
yes
No, not until I clicked on it and a new window opens up.
I tried the UCLinks to link out to a journal that had full text available in Expanded Academic Index. The links to do that were very clear.
Yes, the language and placement of the buttons was good.
Yes. Easy to see whether it would link to full text or search catalog.
no. I had to display results first and then I got the openlink/UC e links. Then when I clicked on it, it said it was available in full text by IEEE. When I clicked on this link, it timed out although OVID said my session was still active and I had 14 minutes left.
This was a test of the inbound links to Gale Expanded Academic Index.
I don't think it would have been clear had I not known that UC-eLinks was the article link service.
No.
Yes.
No. The UC-Elink gave me three options: Expanded Academic Index ASAP; Lippincott; Check Melvyl. The first option gave me an error message. The second option I had to redo a search by title and the font was so small that it I initially missed the citation at the top of the UCELinks page
not really - may be intuitive to an information professional but not to a library user, at least not initially

somewhat but a new person might not see this.
No problem with the links.
it was very clear how do use the links

What difficulties did you encounter?

No response from SFX server
Some entries in the search did not include the OpenLink (SFX) option. E.g., in a search for quantum phase on Inspec, reference number 9 by Giordana N for a Physical Review B article does not offer the OpenLink(SFX) option. PRB is an APS journal, one of the SFX activated publishers, per CDL & Ovid. I could not get to the full text for any AIP/American Institute of Physics or APS/American Physical Society journal articles. I would get the yellow/SFX intermediary screen, but I would get an error message of some sort from both these publishers each time I chose the full text option on the SFX intermediary page. E.g., search for nanobubbles on Inspec via Ovid; reference number 2 by Tyrrell JWG will be a Physical Review Letters article. I was not able to get to full text for this via Ovid. I tried some of the same searchers on CDL/Inspec and got full text fine. For a Proc of the IEEE reference on the SFX-UC intermediary screen, I got no offer of full text.
For some journal articles, full-text link went to the issues list or table of contents rather than directly to the article. IDEAL went to the article but IEEE went to the issue list. Also, it seems we've lost the links to full-text of IEEE conference papers in INSPEC. People will really miss that.
The line that has full reference, open link ,etc is too far below the citation! hence one can feel that the relevant line is the one above which can lead to all sorts of probs.
The first article I got doing the "stem cell Research" search did not have an SFX link. I could not find the mentioned article (I advanced few pages, but I did not go through all of the 172 hits. We schould keepo in mind that in this environment whatever was firs last week might be #50 this week and will be even further down as the time passes by.
I'm also testing Compendex in the process of making a Compendex info page for UCSD. When you type in the keyword earthquake, you get a number of articles in ASCE journals (most UC's have these, but it's not yet a CDL-wide deal). Anyway, there's no "Full text available from [publisher]" for their titles. The box is way too big (compared to CalTech's implementation). And what about requesting links??
the primary one is with the results display in Current Contents: the line following the citation that says "Abstract . Complete Reference . Table of Contents . OpenLink " has a line space between it and the citation it refers to (the one above). It does not have a line space between it and the next citation. Given the spacing, it appears to be connected to the citation below rather than the one above (which it is referring to). Can this be fixed? It does not happen in INSPEC or in Compendex -- only in Current Contents and may cause confusion.
Couldn't bring up the SFX box. I tried every clickable link on the page.
None.

A couple of potential causes for confusion - the link on the left of the Expanded Academic page says "back to your search" - does not take you back to original search (if you're searching in another database. When one goes back to the original search (in OVID), rather than displaying the list of citations, there is a timeout screen. It's not clear how to get back to the citation list, (back button). Also, the message that comes up on the OVID screen re opening a new browser, alt-tab, etc. comes up after (or at the same time) as the new window opens, so you only see that information when you go back trying to find original search.

Clicking on the UC-eLinks lost my OVID citations screen and I had to click on something else to get back to it. Confusing and a hassle for users.
On the UC Links page I think the arrows to go to the full text article or to Melvyl Periodicals (the two options I was presented with) should be linked to the bold words explaining those options. Expanded Academic Index and Melvyl were in bold leading me to believe that they were links and there was no text beneath the arrow. It only took a moment to figure it out, but if both the arrow and the text were links it would be much clearer.
None, but I was given directions on how and what to search by CDL.
One e-link did not work...can't remember the citation, but it was for an Elsevier title. Got a message saying article I was requesting was not found.
none really. The frames displayed in full on the screen with this system.
The process worked fine, and I was able to open the full text link. The only problem I encountered was Ovid's user-hostile "feature" of having the search results disappear behind a timeout window whenever the user clicks on UC-eLinks.
Did not get the article suggested in the test instructions in the first 30 citations at all.
I did an author search for Bork, A. in CC and retrieved 2 citations. I chose the first one, "The Web is not yet suitable for learning". There was a link to IEEE, but when I clicked on it it brought me to the wrong article. The citation for the one I requested was COMPUTER, JUN, 1998, V31(N6):115-116. The link brought me to an article on the same pages, but in issue number 10, not 6 as requested. Also, why does it not default to the basic search? Most of our patrons search by author and the keyword does not find it and the author search always gives us a list of possibilities and you have to check the boxes for it to perform the search. It also could find nothing by aurthor if I entered the author's first name. I had to enter initials only. Also, OVID does not go back as far as CC in telnet or CC on CDL Web. Why? There should be 5 ciations from this author, but we only get 2 because OVID only goes back to 1993 instead of 1989 like the others, why? OR is there a way to expand the years searched in OVID? Also, why can I not request more than one citation at a time as with CDL Request? This is very bothersome and troubling. It seems like a step backwards, not forward. Also, my profile is not remembered when I have to go back to my search to request another citation from my search. It would be much better if it let me request several from my search list and remembered who I was from me turining on my profile at the beginning of the session.
None.
Error message in elinking to Gale's Expanded Academic Index
conference proceedings are not linked - when indeed we do have the majority of items indexed in Inspec and Compendex via IEEE Xplore - better results with journal articles than with book chapters or conference proceedings - but the latter is among the most critical content to the users of this database. Also some fulltext content is available via Lexis-Nexus holdings that is not noted
none
Just not inherently easy to use. Seems busy. I had to keep looking around to see what to do and what something meant.
This test will not remain accessible after I return to the SFX test site. This is the third time I have started filling out the questionnaire.
none
I had trouble with the test search given. "Stem cell research" retrieved 219 results. The article on "molecular markers..." was not #1 and indeed was not on the list. I tried to revise my search and include "molecular markers" and got zero results. When I did a search just for "moelcular markers" I got over 3000 entries. When I added CNS stem cell, I got the one article. I aslo had trouble with aothor searching. I cannot find anything when you put in teh first name. When you put in teh the first initial only, you get a whole list of initials to choose from, but not necessarily the one you want. I did "Lofgren, C" and got 11 entries (including c, ca and cs as first initials). When I search this on telnet melvyl in CC, I get 38 entries, so something is not quite right here. I also did author "bork, a" and got the list to choose from and ther was only 1 coice for "a", Bork AM. This retrieved 3 results. Telnet retrieves 6 resuits. I don't know if thjis is becuase it is a test databasse or if OVID just can't find everything. Sunject search "ahimsa" retrieved 10 results. Telnet retrieves 11.

Did you encounter any errors or erroneous results? If yes, please describe in detail the exact steps you took prior to the error.

Clicked on OpenLink (SFX). Ovid went to a screen that said the linked document was displayed in a new browser window. The new browser window was trying to contact a server called pintabo.ucop but it got no response.
No.
No. Just the lack of e-links for ASCE titles (I have only tested the Nature, IEEE, links).
Yes, received an error message when trying the SFX link (this is Wednesday, 12/19 about 3:45pm) - "Main: error - can't connect to sfx_test_01" Though it has worked ok for me in past sessions...
I did notice that the test article was no longer #1 on the results list. Did the test database get "corrupted" when it was updated????
No errors.
I generally like the ovid interface -- the linking system has two too many intermediate windows.

Yes, test article did not appear. I entered the term exactly as given. Then Highwire and EAI were given as choices, but Highwire did not have the article at all. Said "Article you requested was not found." Eai had the content but when I opened it, another unrelated citation was given first and target article was listed 2nd. The latter opened correctly.
Yes, see above. I performed above search and clicked on OPEN Link and then on the full-text IEEE link and it brought me to the worng citation. Apparently, this error also occurs in CDL Web.

(video recording reviews) Joseph Kulin. Content not available due to copyright restrictions Review Grade: A I am not sure why it is not available when it said earlier it was available through expanded acad. univ.

SFX is a technology that will initially link users to campus holdings, full text, and Request. In the future, it may link to other information such as book reviews, author email addresses, citations appearing in research articles, e-print systems, and other Web resources SFX is a commercial product. If you can think of another short and descriptive name to broadly describe these and future linking services please make a suggestion here.

OtherLinks.
Why don't we have the holdings as Web links? I know it is possible with OVID
This interface looks pretty straightforward...
Author/article-related information
More Web resources...
If most of the commercial vendors are using the icon SFX, perhaps it would be ok to adopt this if it becomes the general parlance.
