Charge and 2001-2002 Workplans
CDL Strategic Technology, Architecture, and Standards
Charge
The California Digital Library is responsible for developing and providing
continuous access to the shared digital content and services of the University
of California, and facilitating and supporting scholar-led innovations in
scholarly communication. A key strategic goal is to provide collaborative
leadership in planning and realizing shared technology architectures and
standards needed to achieve digital information resource interoperability
and integration. The digital technologies employed will include a mix of
distributed and centralized systems which must follow architectural guidelines
and standards to ensure interoperability between systems, consistent levels
of system performance and coherent searching and access methods.
The California Digital Library Technology Architecture and Standards Workgroup
is responsible for recommending and maintaining architectural guidelines
and standards for the University of California shared digital collections.
These guidelines, subject to review by appropriate University bodies and
partners, should be consistent with industry and other University standards,
provide a framework that facilitates the creation of integrated systems,
and provide the flexibility to foster innovations in scholarly communication.
The workgroup will also advise the CDL on strategic technology development
activities that implement the guidelines and the creation of a technology
development agenda in support of the CDL’s mission and goals. This advice
and resulting agenda should address building capacity for technology development,
priorities for technology experiments and explorations, and co-development
and technology funding opportunities.

Work Plan 2001 – 2002
A. Carried Over
- Revise/generalize digital image standards to digital object standards;
append specifications by object type including images, audio, structured
text
- Determine need for and statement of distinct architecture (components)
for archiving (in collaboration with SOPAG task force)
- Develop Security – system, data integrity, data in transit - guidelines
(to add to architecture statement)
- Develop statement on preferred authentication and authorization services
in support of shared collections
B. New
- Assess value of architecture guidelines focusing on usefulness to
partners and technology development
- Review strengths and weaknesses
- Revise as necessary
- Assess use of persistent ID infrastructure; recommend refinements
and future development
- Advise on CDL contributions to national convergence of digital object
standards
- Create a strategic technology development agenda, with a focus on
- Infrastructure for content management, access, and delivery that
follows architecture guidelines
- Capacity and procedures for technology assessment (e.g. of eScholarship
partners such as ECAI)
- Priorities for interoperability/federation across UC digital and
print collections
