Structured Text Working Group
The UC STWG advises the CDL Content Group (including Counting California, eScholarship, Licensed Content and the Online Archive of California) and other CDL groups as necessary on specific issues concerning implementation of TEI encoded digital text Repositories.
Best Practices and Standards
- CDL TEI encoding guidelines (forthcoming in 2005)
Charge
- Advise on infrastructure and support to guide development of Text Encoding Initiatve (TEI) structured text repositories including but not limited to best practices, preservation guidelines, project planning, training,and tools.
- Develop guidelines to foster implementation of TEI structured text repositories including defining standards and best practices for different types of texts (such as oral histories, books, reports, letters, etc.).
- Advise on descriptive metadata requirements for structured digital text repositories defining how the TEI header relates and can interoperate with other metadata schema such as DC, EAD, MARC, METS, OAI, etc.
- Advise on issues concerning the preservation of structured texts and recommend standards and guidelines as needed.
- Advise on best practices to manage "external data streams" associated with TEI files such as images, audio streams, video.
- Considers strategies to ensure that TEI digital text repositories are "interoperable."
- Considers the resources required to build and manage a system-wide technical infrastructure for structured digital text repositories.
- Members will share information with UC Libraries and CDL garnered from individual participation in national groups developing tools and best practices for the implementation of TEI in Libraries.
