Using UC-eLinks with EndNote 7

Beginning with EndNote 7, it is possible to save re-executable OpenURLs (UC-eLinks) with the citations you save into your EndNote libraries. This will provide all the UC-eLinks services, including full text access (when available), the ability to check local holdings, etc., from your saved citations.

This feature will work with Internet Explorer or Mozilla as the default web browser on Windows machines (PCs). It will work with Internet Explorer, Mozilla, or Netscape on OS X (Macs).

Set-up:

  1. Open your EndNote program and go to Preferences, located under the Edit menu on a PC and under the EndNote 7 menu on a Mac. Select OpenURL in the window that opens.
  2. Check the Enable OpenURL checkbox.
  3. Change the OpenURL Path to the following: http://ucelinks.cdlib.org:8888/sfx_local
  4. Change the Argument to the following:

    ?sid=ISI:EndNote&aufirst=AUFIRST&aulast=AULAST&issn=ISSN&isbn=ISBN&atitle=ATITLE
    &title=TITLE&volume=VOLUME&issue=ISSUE&date=DATE&spage=SPAGE&epage=EPAGE

Note: The only difference from the default setting is that the "?sid=ISI:WoS" argument is changed to "?sid=ISI:EndNote". Be sure to copy this as one continuous line of text.

  5. Click OK.

To use UC-eLinks:

  1. First open a citation in one of your EndNote libraries. Note that simply highlighting the citation is not enough.
  2. Select References...OpenURL Link.
A UC-eLinks window will open with your citation and full text retrieval options.

Note: Some databases, like Ovid's BIOSIS Previews database, insert extra information such as the place of publication in the journal name in parentheses. You must edit this out in your citation view to allow UC-eLinks to locate the full text. For example, change "Plant Physiology (Rockville, MD)" to just "Plant Physiology".
