Below is a Word document, EndNote Connection Files for UC Users, that contains information about using EndNote connection files with CSA databases, instructions for modifying the CSA connection files for your campus, and some notes on how keyword searching in Ovid databases (via Z39.50) differs from Ovid's web interface.
Additionally, you'll find three special EndNote connection files (Windows and Macintosh versions) to share with your users, one for PsycINFO via CSA, one for BIOSIS Previews via Ovid, and one for Melvyl which sends users to the new version of Melvyl. ISI ResearchSoft is in the process of updating the connection files for the new Melvyl Catalog, and plans to have the new version on their ftp site sometime in September/October 2003. We are including copies of the connect files here to help with a smooth transition top the new Melvyl.
Note: The CSA connection files must be modified to use the CSA User ID and Password for your campus before you distribute these to your end-users. Please read all the instructions in the Word document before you modify these connection files and make them available to your users.
Both the Windows and Macintosh versions have been compressed (zipped for Windows [.zip extension] and stuffed for Macintosh [.sit extension]) so the files need to be expanded before they can be used. The files are not self-extracting. Windows users can use WinZip and Mac users can use Stuffit Expander (both available for free via the WWW) or any other compression software.
Clicking on one of the connection file links will open the compression software dialog box. Highlight the connection file and click the Extract button or the Save this file to disk link. This will open a dialog box that will allow you to save the connection files in the location of your choice. You'll want to save these in the "Connections" folder of your EndNote software. Once saved in your Connections folder, you can edit the PsycINFO connection file to include your campus CSA User ID and Password by selecting the connection file from EndNote's Connection Manager and clicking the Edit button. See the Word document for additional information. You do not need to edit the Ovid connection files with campus-specific information.
Once you've edited the PsycINFO connection files for use at your campus, you can distribute these, the BIOSIS Previews connection files and the new Melvyl connection files to your users via email, posting on your library web site, etc. You'll want to notify your end-users that they will need to copy the connection files into the Connections folder in their copy of EndNote. The user will also need to open EndNote's Connection Manager and select the new connection files.
Reminder: The PsycINFO and BIOSIS Previews connection files will only work for searches initiated from a UC campus IP address. The ability to connect to databases (via EndNote) from off-campus can only be accomplished if your campus implements a Z39.50 proxy server or provides a Virtual Private Network (VPN) service. The Melvyl connection files work from on and off campus, since UC does not restrict access to the Melvyl Catalog by IP address.
These connection files were created using EndNote 6.0.2 for Windows and Macintosh. Procedures may vary slightly if you are using another version of the EndNote software.
