1. Roy Tennant Joins CDL

The CDL is pleased to announce that Roy Tennant has begun a temporary part-time assignment with us. He will work on the eScholarship initiative with major contributions to Web design and service design. Roy also serves on the Tools and Services Working Group.

The goal of eScholarship is to create an infrastructure available to scholars to support immediate dissemination and access to scholarship and for the development of innovations in scholarly communication. There is more information on eScholarship at [ http://www.cdlib.org/eschol/ ].

2. Lucia Snowhill Appointed to the Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections. Barbara Kornstein Retires

The CDL is pleased to announce the appointment of Lucia Snowhill (SB) to the CDL Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections to replace Barbara Kornstein (B) who retired at the end of 1999. Thanks are due Barbara for her period of service on the committee from its inception in July of 1998. The CDL is fortunate to have someone with Lucia's knowledge of the social sciences and who has worked in so many collaborative roles, including membership in the CDL's Education Working Group and various LAUC roles. Lucia will assume Barbara's responsibilities for communication with specific bibliographer groups. Lucia's term will extend until July 2002.

The CDL Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections was appointed to advise the CDL on shared collections from a systemwide viewpoint (see [ http://www.cdlib.org/libstaff/sharedcoll/jsc/ ] and to identify and manage appropriate consultative and evaluation mechanisms. Other members are Clinton Howard (D), Alan Ritch (SC), Cindy Shelton (UCLA), Susan Starr (SD), and Beverlee French (CDL).

4. Enhancements to the CDL-hosted Databases

2000 greets CDL's users with a wide range of new and improved services. In addition to the debut of SearchLight, we encourage you to explore these important enhancements:

REQUEST
Enhancements to the "Request" service for convenient automatic requests by UC faculty, graduate students, and staff include the following:

  • Articles found in many CDL-hosted journal databases may now be requested. Users will be alerted when the full content of articles is available online. Request for articles will be available in the following databases: ABI, BIOSIS, COMP, CC, INSPEC, MAGS, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO (not in PE or any of the @ databases).
  • Books held locally may be requested from another campus if they are missing, withdrawn, or checked out from your campus (campuses with links to circulation status: UCD, UCI, UCR, UCSC,UCSD, and UCSF).
  • Users may request a total of 20 books per day (up from 10) and a total of 20 articles from all databases.

Request is still limited to Faculty, Staff, and Graduate students.

ENHANCED DISCOVERY TOOLS
The CDL-hosted Databases interface, which includes access to the Melvyl(c) Union Catalog, now includes a drop-down menu for easy linking to other journal databases.

UC PRESS BOOKS
Electronic editions include the full content of approximately 60 UC Press backlist books as well as new releases (made available via the Electronic Editions) linked from the Melvyl Catalog.

NEW INDEXES

  • In ABI/Inform users may search by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) or North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes.
  • In GEOREF users may browse by Thesaurus terms.
  • In PsycINFO users may search by General Topics, groupings of commonly searched subjects (also known as "search hedges").

ELECTRONIC JOURNAL URL DISPLAYS
Displays of URLs for electronic journals in the Periodicals database have been moved to a section called "Online Access" and now include campus labels to indicate clearly which campuses have access. Print holdings are now labeled "Print Access".

SEARCH HISTORIES
Users may now delete multiple searches from their search histories.

SAVE/LIST
Users may now delete duplicates from their saved lists, and new lists are easier to create.

LINKS TO HOLDINGS
Links to holdings are now available for ArtAbstracts, Anthropological Literature, the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, Georef, RILM, History of Science, and the English Short Title Catalog.

5. New Resources

a. Blackwell Trial

Records for the 228 electronic journal titles from Blackwell Synergy are now available via the CDL Directory on a trial basis. Follow this URL to view a listing of these journals in the Directory:

http://www.cdlib.org/cgi-bin/search?perpage=50&index=provider&word=Blackwell+Synergy

Note: Trial access resources are those resources that are currently available to CDL users on a trial basis. There is no guarantee that these resources will always be available.

b. Elsevier Links

Links from the California Periodicals database to Elsevier articles and journal titles are now activated. The collaboration between the CDL and Elsevier Science enabled us to create links to nearly 1,000 titles -- a huge task.

Note: Elsevier is missing many current issues. Please report dead links that you discover to cdl@www.cdlib.org.

6. New Information on the Shared Collections Web Pages

Joint Steering Committee Subject Area Survey Updates Now Available

The Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections (JSC) is charged with identifying appropriate mechanisms for system-wide development of digital collections in the various domains (humanities, social sciences, etc.) to serve UC instructional and research programs. In July 1999, the JSC queried UC bibliographer groups again to update the original survey conducted in late 1998, following its intent to update opinions about commercially available resources every six months. Bibliographers from UC's nine campuses identified a rich variety of resources in each discipline that would enhance the CDL and benefit faculty, students, and scholars.

The survey updates can be found online in the Libstaff web pages in the Shared Collections section under the Joint Steering Committee as: [ http://www.cdlib.org/inside/groups/jsc/#surveys ] This document describes the survey process and contains links to both the original survey and the July 1999 updates. All of the survey response documents are in the password-protected portion of the site; consult with Mary Engle (mary.engle@ucop.edu) or your Collection Development Officer for access information.

The updates note whether it supplements or replaces earlier efforts. When no update is present, the original survey response stands as that group's response.

CDL Licensing Tool Kit Information for Vendors

In the CDL Licensing Tool Kit, there are two documents describing technical information needed to create links both to vendor's content and back to UC holdings:

  1. "Technical Information Required to Link to Full Content" describes what information the CDL needs from vendors to link to article content on remote web sites; that is, linking from the CDL out to the vendor's content.
  2. "Technical Information for Linking to CDL Holdings" describes what information vendors need to know to link back from content on remote web sites to the UC Periodicals database; that is, linking from a vendor's site back to UC holdings.

Don't forget to share the "CDC Principles for Acquiring and Licensing Information in Digital Formats" and the "CDL Checklist of Points to be Addressed in a CDL License Agreement" with vendors. It is helpful to give them these documents very early on in your serious pursuit of vendors' electronic products.
