The goal of eScholarship is to create an infrastructure available to scholars to support immediate dissemination and access to scholarship and for the development of innovations in scholarly communication. There is more information on eScholarship at [ http://www.cdlib.org/eschol/ ].

REQUEST
Enhancements to the "Request" service for convenient automatic requests by UC faculty, graduate students, and staff include the following:
Request is still limited to Faculty, Staff, and Graduate students.
ENHANCED DISCOVERY TOOLS
The CDL-hosted Databases interface, which includes access to the Melvyl(c) Union Catalog, now includes a drop-down menu for easy linking to other journal databases.
UC PRESS BOOKS
Electronic editions include the full content of approximately 60 UC Press backlist books as well as new releases (made available via the Electronic Editions) linked from the Melvyl Catalog.
NEW INDEXES
ELECTRONIC JOURNAL URL DISPLAYS
Displays of URLs for electronic journals in the Periodicals database have been moved to a section called "Online Access" and now include campus labels to indicate clearly which campuses have access. Print holdings are now labeled "Print Access".
SEARCH HISTORIES
Users may now delete multiple searches from their search histories.
SAVE/LIST
Users may now delete duplicates from their saved lists, and new lists are easier to create.
LINKS TO HOLDINGS
Links to holdings are now available for ArtAbstracts, Anthropological Literature, the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, Georef, RILM, History of Science, and the English Short Title Catalog.
Records for the 228 electronic journal titles from Blackwell Synergy are now available via the CDL Directory on a trial basis. Follow this URL to view a listing of these journals in the Directory:
http://www.cdlib.org/cgi-bin/search?perpage=50&index=provider&word=Blackwell+Synergy
Note: Trial access resources are those resources that are currently available to CDL users on a trial basis. There is no guarantee that these resources will always be available.
b. Elsevier Links
Links from the California Periodicals database to Elsevier articles and journal titles are now activated. The collaboration between the CDL and Elsevier Science enabled us to create links to nearly 1,000 titles -- a huge task.
Note: Elsevier is missing many current issues. Please report dead links that you discover to cdl@www.cdlib.org.
The Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections (JSC) is charged with identifying appropriate mechanisms for system-wide development of digital collections in the various domains (humanities, social sciences, etc.) to serve UC instructional and research programs. In July 1999, the JSC queried UC bibliographer groups again to update the original survey conducted in late 1998, following its intent to update opinions about commercially available resources every six months. Bibliographers from UC's nine campuses identified a rich variety of resources in each discipline that would enhance the CDL and benefit faculty, students, and scholars.
The survey updates can be found online in the Libstaff web pages in the Shared Collections section under the Joint Steering Committee as: [ http://www.cdlib.org/inside/groups/jsc/#surveys ] This document describes the survey process and contains links to both the original survey and the July 1999 updates. All of the survey response documents are in the password-protected portion of the site; consult with Mary Engle (mary.engle@ucop.edu) or your Collection Development Officer for access information.
The updates note whether it supplements or replaces earlier efforts. When no update is present, the original survey response stands as that group's response.
CDL Licensing Tool Kit Information for Vendors
In the CDL Licensing Tool Kit, there are two documents describing technical information needed to create links both to vendor's content and back to UC holdings:
Don't forget to share the "CDC Principles for Acquiring and Licensing Information in Digital Formats" and the "CDL Checklist of Points to be Addressed in a CDL License Agreement" with vendors. It is helpful to give them these documents very early on in your serious pursuit of vendors' electronic products.
Remember also that reports, working documents, and status information of particular interest to library staff, are all available at http://www.cdlib.org/libstaff/.
For information about whether your UC campus has access to a particular electronic journal or Internet resource, contact your local collection development officer.
CDLINFO is designed to inform UC Librarians, and the UC community, about the progress of the CDL, policy issues under discussion, and newly available electronic resources. We hope that subscribers from the UC libraries will pass on selected information from the newsletter to faculty, staff, and students on their campuses, as appropriate. More complete information about the CDL, as well as the Directory of Collections and Services which leads to digital resources, is available at the CDL website at http://www.cdlib.org.
