CDLINFO Newsletter, February 26, 2004 Vol. 7, No. 4
After much discussion and campus input, two indexing and abstracting databases were chosen to be cut in 2004 because of budget reductions: the Computer Database and the National Newspaper Index. These databases were selected because their content is largely duplicative of other licensed digital resources available systemwide.
The University of California Resource Sharing Fund was cut substantially for 2003/2004 and subsequent years. The University Librarians asked the Collection Development Committee (CDC) to review the databases funded by the Shared Collections and Acquisitions Program (SCAP) for possible cuts.
The CDC then asked the Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections (JSC) to do an initial review, set deselection criteria and guidelines, and provide preliminary recommendations. The JSC conducted a study of several possible databases for deselection. After extensive campus input on the JSC recommendations was gathered, the University Librarians endorsed the recommendations to cancel the Computer Database (Gale) and the National Newspaper Index (Gale) as of July 1, 2004.
When the vendor has the option to name campuses individually, the wording would be something like, "Access paid by [campus library name]" and when the vendor is able to provide only one message, the wording would be something like, "Access paid by the University of California Libraries."
A web site with more information about these cuts and language that can be used by the campuses for publicizing these changes is available at http://www.cdlib.org/inside/collect/deselection.html.
The CDL has reached an agreement to license the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) electronic journal, available at: http://content.nejm.org/.
The electronic journal contains full-text articles from the New England Journal of Medicine, excluding meeting notices, "Books Received," and advertising content. It includes full text coverage from 1993 to the present, and abstracts from 1975 to the present.
All UC campuses have online access to the NEJM through December 2004, with a 2005 renewal dependent on the resolution of serious contractual issues.
The NEMJ was recommended by a wide variety of UC selector groups, endorsed by the Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections (JSC), and approved by the Collection Development Committee (CDC). Keir Reavie at UC San Francisco will be the new Resource Liaison.
We would like to thank Anneliese Taylor at UC San Francisco for her hard work on this new resource.
Due to a new version of Luna Insight software, the UC image collections must be accessed through new URLs, which have been changed to take advantage of some additional features. If you are using PIDs, they have been updated. The actual URLs for the collections are listed below in case you want to use them:
MOAC
PID: http://uclibs.org/PID/32962
URL:
http://demonstratorcollections.cdlib.org/BrowserInsight/BrowserInsight?cmd=start&cid=2&iia=0&isl=1&un=ucuser&pw=ucuser
Saskia
PID: http://uclibs.org/PID/32963
URL:
http://demonstratorcollections.cdlib.org/BrowserInsight/BrowserInsight?cmd=start&cid=3&iia=0&isl=1&un=ucuser&pw=ucuser
Tebtunis Papyri
PID: http://uclibs.org/PID/22416
URL:
http://demonstratorcollections.cdlib.org/BrowserInsight/BrowserInsight?cmd=start&cid=4&iia=0&isl=1&un=ucuser&pw=ucuser
In addition, there is a new support page:
http://www.lunaimaging.com/support/hosted/cdl/index.html
user name: cdl
password: seecal411
This page has a link to statistics for Saskia, MOAC, and Tebtunis; the CDL is waiting for information on AMICO. The support page also has links to the installers. We are using the Deploy Director, which is self updating. Once users install the Deploy Director, it will automatically notify them of updates in the future. A direct link to the Deploy Director download appears on the pages with PIDs above.
Access rights have also changed for the databases. A guest account for access to MOAC has been established, available from http://uclibs.org/PID/32962. In addition, it's now a little more restrictive for the default "ucuser" to export. See the access rights document for more information: http://www.cdlib.org/inside/instruct/luna_insight_access_rights.rtf.

This trial is to encourage all selectors and potential users to try the online versions of these products. Please test the functionality of the interface, including printing, browsing, searching, using the index, and reviewing the overall content.
To access the titles, use the URL for each encyclopedia, then choose "Table of Contents by Alpha" from the left side of the page. You have several navigation choices from the table of contents list, including "View HTML" and "View PDF." Users can also get a complete list of the subscriptions your campus owns by choosing the customized link at the bottom of the homepage.
In early April I will query all campuses to determine what the preferences are for each title. Decisions about each campus' preferences and purchases will need to be submitted to me by Friday, April 30. In order to determine the best pricing, all campuses will need to comply with this deadline.
Please share this information widely with your colleagues and publicize the trial as you think best on your campus. If you have questions about the trial or specific content, contact Julia Gelfand, Dekker Resource Liaison at jgelfand@uci.edu or (949) 824-4971.
The CDL is pleased to announce the appointment of a new group of Resource Liaisons:
The Resource Liaisons perform an extremely valuable service to all the campuses by making sure our licensed resources work to our satisfaction in the best possible way for users. Please welcome these new Resource Liaisons, and feel free to contact them for any needs you may have related to access, content, user interfaces, and educational materials for their assigned resources.
News and events, press releases, reports and guidelines, and articles published by CDL staff are posted on the CDL web site. Please share news of this resource with your colleagues!
In addition, status information about CDL resources, reports, and working documents of particular interest to library staff are available on the Inside CDL web site.
For information about whether your UC campus has access to a particular electronic journal or Internet resource, contact your local collection development officer.
CDLINFO informs UC librarians and the UC community about the progress of the CDL, policy issues under discussion, and newly available electronic resources. Please share selected information from this newsletter with faculty, staff, and students on the campuses.
