1. CDL-Hosted Databases Transition Update

Public Web Site
A public web site that provides information on the transition of the CDL-hosted databases to new vendor web interfaces is now available. It includes a timeline and detailed information in the form of frequently asked questions[http://www.cdlib.org/news/cdlhosteddatabases.html]. Please refer patrons to this site to learn more about the transition process.
Campus Meetings
Transition Steering Committee (TSC) members have already begun coordinating meetings with library staff and faculty and graduate students. In addition, CDL staff Laine Farley and Ellen Meltzer have begun visiting the campuses to discuss the A & I transition. The purpose of the meetings is to provide a forum for dissemination of information about the database transition process and to address concerns and gather feedback. Another goal of the meetings is to provide library staff with information so that they can more effectively initiate discussions with their faculty and students about the upcoming transitions. Please contact your TSC member to find out about meetings on your campus.

TSC Members:
Peter Brueggeman (UCSD)
Andrea Duda (UCSB)
Min-Lin Fang (UCSF)
Cheryl Gomez (UCSC)
Gabriella Gray (UCLA)
Robert Heyer-Gray (UCD)
Patricia Iannuzzi (UCB)
John Ober (CDL)

2. New Resources Available

NOTE: New resources listed below are not yet in the CDL Directory of Collections and Services; they will be added within the next 2 weeks. You can access them directly from the URL provided.
a. Mary Ann Liebert Journals
The CDL has licensed the Mary Ann Liebert journals [http://www.liebertonline.com/], a smaller publisher whose primary focus is in the areas of biomedical research and clinical medicine. Online access is provided via the CatchWord platform. Currently 36 journals offer full text access, with additional full text journals to be added during 2001. This Tier 2 contract was negotiated initially by Anne Prussing (UCSD) on behalf of the UC Health Science Selectors. Mary Ann Liebert access is available to all 9 campuses.
b. MD Consult
A Tier 2 license for access to MD Consult [http://home.mdconsult.com/groups/calibraries1122.html], an online clinical information resource, is now available for Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego and San Francisco. These seven campuses share access for 50 simultaneous users to its full text of selected medical texts, articles in selected medical journals, practice guidelines, drug information, and patient handouts. Anne Prussing (UCSD) negotiated the Tier 2 license on behalf of the UC Health Sciences Selectors Group.

NOTE: Users need to click the "Open Generic Edition" button to gain access or follow the instructions under the "Personal Edition" section to create an individual account.

3. MEDLINE/HealthSTAR Regeneration 2001

NLM has begun sending new MEDLINE records to CDL and we are now loading these into our MEDLINE/HealthSTAR database. Users with Updates will begin to see new records this week. Please remember that CDL's MEDLINE coverage is NOT the same as PubMED's coverage. CDL does not load OldMEDLINE or PreMEDLINE records. See the NLM Technical Bulletin for more information on the differences between PubMed and MEDLINE. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/nd99/nd99_scope.html

The CDL version of MEDLINE will continue to use the 2000 MeSH records. CDL will not be loading the 2001 MeSH headings. When you do a browse search, you will be browsing the year 2000 MeSH headings. MeSH terms that are new for 2001 will not be included, however, you can search on these new terms by doing a Keyword (KW) search in the Telnet and Web interfaces. This means that you may get slightly different sets of items retrieved if you do the same search on CDL's version of MEDLINE/HealthSTAR and on PubMed or other versions of MEDLINE.

Interface changes for CDL version of MEDLINE/HealthSTAR.

  1. Unique ID (UI) & PUBMED Identifier (PMID)
Sometime in 2001 NLM will no longer use the UI. Instead they will be using a PMID. The CDL display label will become "Unique ID/ PMID:" in the web interface, and UI/PMID in the telnet interface. Both UI's and PMID's will be in the same index. FIND UI will be a synonym for FIND PMID. The TAG will remain AN.

  2. New fields from NLM
NLM is adding some new non-MeSH subject fields to MEDLINE. These new fields will be searched in the Keyword (KW) and Subject word (SW) indexes. Note: The SW index appears only in telnet interface. These will display as subjects. NLM expects to begin populating these fields some time in 2001. Although we do not yet have sample data or even examples of the content of these fields, the field names are fairly self-explanatory as to the possible content.
    Personal Name as Subject
    Procurement Source
    Sponsoring Agency
    Space Flight Mission

  3. Abstracts
NLM says that abstracts may be multiply-occurring in the future. If this is the case, then users will see multiple abstracts. In addition to the MEDLINE abstract other abstracts found may also be added in MEDLINE records in the future. These could be abstracts that are added by outside producers or, perhaps, consumer-directed abstracts that some journals are beginning to include.
