1. PsycINFO Database Reload

On Thursday, March 25th, the reloaded PsycINFO database was moved into production. There are several new access points for the file. The changes are summarized below.

New Indexes:

  • Classification Code (CC) [Note: two digit codes cover 1887-present; three/four digit codes from 1967-present]
  • Corporate Author (CA)
  • Exact Corporate Author (XCA)
  • Series (SE)
  • Exact series (XSE)
  • Sponsoring agency (SP)
  • Publisher (PU)
  • Population group (POP) (This used to be done as an exact subject.)
  • Age group (AGE) (This used to be done as an exact subject.)

New Command in the web: Browse -- May be used with exact or keyword thesaurus terms.

New Options: The Form BOOK is no longer a limit. It will be directly searchable. This will allow bibliographers to create an Update search on the Form Book. The Update result will be a list of the newly added books.

2. IEEE Image Changes

CDL has finished loading the linking data for IEEE images for all types of materials.

The new links were moved into production on Thursday, March 25th. Users will see URL hyperlinks as well as the Article Image hyperlinks. Users clicking on the URL hyperlinks will not be asked for demographics and will see a different interim page for the links. Instead of the image server page that offers the option of "Continue image display" and has IEEE/IEE copyright information, the users will see CDL's standard Electronic Journal interim page.

During this 3-week transition period, CDL staff will work on the programming needed to remove IEEE-project-specific information and commands from the interface. IEEE task force members will work with their campus colleagues to publicize the change in access.

Change in methods of access:

  • No access to IEEE images from linemode interface.
  • User verification will be by IP address, not by CDL passwords, so there will no longer be remote access from non-UC IP addresses.
  • CDL will no longer require that users fill out the IEEE demographic survey, and users will no longer need to "Identify" themselves in order for us to collect data.

On April 15th, CDL web users will no longer have a link for the locally mounted images and will no longer be able to limit retrieval to only items with images. They will continue to see the URL hyperlink to IEEE/IEE materials. The demographics section of the Profile will be removed.

3. Digital Library Strategies Forums

Over 200 participants from every campus attended either the northern or southern regional version of a Digital Library Strategies Forum hosted by the CDL in late March. Focusing on the theme "Frameworks for Collaboration," participants shared information about activities at their campus and discussed collaborative strategies for building digital components of UC library and information services. Separate afternoon breakout sessions focused on shared collections, tools and services, educating users, and technology standards and architectures.

Most participants were invited from campus libraries, but faculty, data centers, instructional development offices, and visual resource collections were also represented. The opportunity to discuss openly the intersections between campus activities and CDL work and planning was acknowledged as a crucial component of defining and building the "co-library." Participants reported that the forum successfully helped create a shared understanding of the potential for collaboration on digital library issues within UC. The list of challenges and opportunities that the forums generated will be enormously useful as development of the CDL proceeds. A thematic summary of discussions from the forum will be posted soon in the "libstaff" section of the forum, where the forum agenda and background documents are already available (http://www.cdlib.org/libstaff/).

4. PIR, the RFP Process, Mary Heath, UC Davis

The CDL has issued a Request for Purchase (RFP) for the supply of a freestanding interlibrary loan "Fulfillment Service". This application is the second piece in the CDL Request functionality -- the first having been the collaboratively developed Resolution Service -- and will complete the functionality envisioned by the CDL Request architecture. It is expected that the Fulfillment Service will be integrated into the second phase of CDL Request implementation in January 2000.

Currently, the CDL Request Resolution Service analyzes a request and then forwards appropriate bibliographic and patron information, as well as an ordered list of UC library locations holding the item, to the OCLC ILL Direct system. When implemented, the Fulfillment Service will replace the OCLC ILL Direct system in the CDL Request process. It is further envisioned that the Fulfillment Service will provide a single workflow for interlibrary transactions for each participating unit on all of the nine campuses, managing all ILL request processing, as well as providing temporary tracking functions for materials while they are in the loan process. The application will accept requests from a variety of sources in addition to the Request Resolution Service (e.g., web request forms, manual input, external systems such as OCLC and DOCLINE), will manage the fulfillment of the request, and will be able to direct requests to other, external systems as appropriate (e.g., OCLC and DOCLINE).

The Fulfillment Service RFP specifications are posted on the PIR web site (www.cdlib.org/libstaff/pir -- the last entry under the section titled Descriptive Information). The document is "Patron Initiated Request Fulfillment Service: Request for Purchase", and is available in Word6.0 and PDF formats. The creation of this document was a real collaborative effort, with significant input from a number of people on the nine campuses.

The deadline for vendor responses to the RFP is mid-May, and a small team of Librarians and staff from a number of campuses will evaluate the responses. The top three bids will be presented to ILL and Circulation staffs from the nine campuses in two (north and south) workshops to be held in early summer, and input to the final selection solicited in those workshops. A contract for a Fulfillment Service system is expected to be completed by mid-summer.

5. CDL Featured in Premier Digital Library Journal

Upon invitation from the editors of D-Lib Magazine, one of the premier journals covering digital library research and developments internationally, CDL assistant director John Ober contributed a descriptive overview of the CDL that has appeared in the March issue of the magazine (at http://www.dlib.org/). The article describes the CDL as a collection of both technical and organizational innovations and attempts to list the assumptions, expectations, and core technologies that drive its development.

6. One-Stop Access to CDL Documents for Campus Library Staff

The library staff ("libstaff") section of the CDL web site at http://www.cdlib.org/libstaff/ is populated with information about the activities and development of the CDL. It has recently been reorganized for better navigation and discovery of documents related to current projects such as PIR/Request, CDL units and working groups such as shared collections plans, and as a "one-stop" location for important resources such as a description and checklists for the transition of the Melvyl name or descriptions of the CDL Directory and ways to link into it.
