1. Library Planning and Action Initiative Advisory Task Force Issues Final Report

The Library Planning and Action Initiative (LPAI) Advisory Task Force has issued a final report that is publicly available on the LPAI Web site http://www.lpai.ucop.edu/outcomes/finalrpt/.

Appointed in Fall 1996 to address critical issues in UC access to scholarly information, the Task Force was composed of University administrators, librarians, and faculty. As the summary of the final report indicates, the Task Force "was charged to identify organizational, budgetary, and functional changes required to ensure the continued scholarly and economic vitality of the University of California's (UC) libraries, to guide library evolution over the next decade, and to ensure that immediate actions are taken in support of such changes and evolution."

To achieve the goal of innovative, cost-effective, and comprehensive access to scholarly and scientific information for the UC community, the Task Force recommended that the University should:

1. Strengthen resource sharing.
2. Establish the California Digital Library.
3. Sustain and develop mechanisms to support print collections.
4. Collaborate with libraries, museums, other universities, and industry.
5. Develop an information infrastructure that supports the needs of faculty and students to disseminate and access scholarly and scientific information in a networked environment.
6. Provide leadership in the national effort to transform the process of scholarly and scientific communication.
7. Organize an environment of continuous planning and innovation for UC's libraries.

Several major steps have already been taken in support of the Task Force's recommendations.

2. Patrick Newell to Serve as Special Assistant to the University Librarian for Strategic Projects, California Digital Library

Patrick Newell has been appointed as Special Assistant to the University Librarian. As support to the University Librarian, he will work with the senior management team of the CDL to develop and coordinate CDL projects. He will assist in strategic planning, analyzing trends in information management and technology, exploring issues involved in the transition from paper-based to digital resources and services, and developing alternative models for scholarly and scientific information.

Patrick comes to the CDL from UC San Francisco, where he served as Special Assistant to the University Librarian for Planning and Special Projects and as a Personal Information Management Specialist. He has also made several presentations on medical libraries and information technology.

He holds an MA in Philosophy from Fordham University in New York and an MLIS from the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.

3. CDL Technologies Chosen as the New Name for CDL Technical Group

Richard Lucier and M. Stuart Lynn (AVP, Information Resources and Communications) announced that the technical unit of the CDL will be called CDL Technologies. It was felt that this name best reflected the function of the unit. Recruitment of a permanent director is underway. In the meantime, Bob Brandriff continues as Acting Director.

4. Parts of the CDL Move to a New Building in Late April and Mid-May

CDL Technologies, the CDL System Services group, and Library Planning and Policy Development are moving with most of the UC Office of the President departments to 1111 Franklin Street in Oakland, a few blocks from the current site in the Kaiser Building. The first two groups move to the 7th floor of the new building on April 24, and the third moves to the 11th floor on May 18. The rest of the CDL (Richard Lucier's office, Shared Collections and Services, and Education and Communications) will remain in the Kaiser Building but may move to a different floor at a later date. Telephone numbers and email addresses will remain the same, although fax numbers may change. The address of the new building is
1111 Franklin Street
Oakland, CA 94607-5200
Since the computers that house and run the Melvyl system will remain in place at the Kaiser Building, the move should not affect the functioning of the Melvyl system.

Readers can see current information on the move, as well as directions to the new building, at http://www.ucop.edu/ucophome/services/bldgnews.html.

5. Information about the CDLINFO-L Listserv

The CDLINFO-L listserv is designed for UC library employees as a first step in CDL efforts to build an active communications program to inform the UC community about progress in creation of the CDL, policy issues under discussion, and newly available electronic resources.

We hope that subscribers from the UC libraries will pass on selected information from the listserv to faculty, staff, and students on their campuses, as appropriate. In the future, we plan to develop a communications program to reach UC faculty, staff, and students, as well as others outside of UC who may be interested in our activities. We are also in the process of designing a CDL web page. In the interim, we are maintaining the current Library Planning and Action Initiative (LPAI) web page and have opened it to the public.
