1. HSCI is Available via the Web

The History of Science and Technology (@RLG) database (HSCI) retrieves citations from journal articles, conference proceedings, books, book reviews, and dissertations in the history of science, the history of technology, and allied historical fields in a variety of languages. Subjects covered include agriculture, biology, construction, chemistry, energy, engineering, geology, linguistics, mathematics, medicine, music, philosophy, physics, social sciences, town planning, transport engineering, and zoology.

The small database contains citations, some with abstracts, indexed by the History of Science Society and the Society for the History of Technology from 1976-present. It is the online equivalent of Current Bibliography in the History of Technology and Current Bibliography of the History of Science and Its Cultural Influences.

The web version of this database now offers publication type limits to searches, an option not available in the Telnet version. Help screens for finding more/fewer/zero have been edited for HSCI, and the database description and general help screens have been carried over to be consistent with information in the Telnet version. The help and database description screens are accessible from the HELP button on the HSCI search screen.

To locate items in your search results at UC or other California libraries, search for periodical titles in the California Periodicals (PE) database or for books in the Melvyl Catalog (CAT).

2. PIR Phase II

The vendor response to the CDL's Request for Purchase (RFP) for a freestanding interlibrary loan "Fulfillment Service" is impressive: Several of the top library software development companies intend to submit bids and are interested in working with UC. The software will give UC libraries control over the PIR system. Currently, the CDL-developed Request Resolution Service analyzes a request and then forwards appropriate bibliographic and patron information, as well as an ordered list of UC library locations holding the item, to the OCLC ILL Direct system. When implemented, the Fulfillment Service will replace the OCLC ILL Direct system in the Request process. The Fulfillment Service will hopefully provide a single workflow for interlibrary transactions for each participating unit on all of the nine campuses. It will manage all ILL request processing, and provide temporary tracking functions for materials while they are in the loan process. This software application will accept requests from a variety of sources in addition to the Request Resolution Service (e.g., web request forms, manual input, and external systems such as OCLC and DOCLINE); will manage the fulfillment of the request; and will be able to direct requests to other external systems as appropriate (e.g., OCLC and DOCLINE).

In order to release a fully functional and thoroughly tested system in January, 2000, the timeline has been compressed to allow time for the system to be developed, integrated into CDL software, and tested by the campuses. The deadline for vendor responses to the RFP is May 19th, and the CDL must choose finalists by May 28th. A small review team of librarians and staff from a number of campuses will evaluate the responses before the end of May. The CDL would like to thank Charlotte Rubens, Jason Newborn, Margaret Tapper, Claire Bellanti, Pat Cross, Jackie Wilson, Gary Johnson, and Deborah Turner for their help in evaluating the Bidder's Proposals.

The top three bids will be presented to ILL and Circulation staffs from the nine campuses in workshops to be held in early summer. Input to the final selection will be solicited at those workshops. The Southern California workshop will be June 9 from 1-4pm at UC Irvine. The Northern California workshop will be June 15 from 10am-1pm at UC San Francisco. A contract for a Fulfillment Service system is expected to be completed by mid-summer.

3. Valuable Discussions from DL Strategies Forum

Over 200 library staff members and others participated in CDL-hosted Digital Library Strategies Forums held in two locations in March 1999 to share and discuss continuing development of digital library collections, services, and tools. The stated objectives of the forums included:
  • Sharing information about digital library goals and activities (broadly defined) across UC;
  • Discovering and creating opportunities to continue and deepen collaboration in building a co-library;
  • Sharing perspectives and opinions about DL strategies; and
  • Communicating critical information about activities of the CDL.

Participants reported that the discussions helped create an understanding of the potential for collaboration on digital library activities for UC. They have been enormously valuable for CDL planning, contributing, for example, to planning for the July 1999 "release" of the CDL (summarized in CDLINFO volume 2:7, April 29, 1999 available at http://www.cdlib.org/news/cdlinfo/cdlinfo042999.html).

A summary of the discussions and the themes that emerged from them is now available at http://www.cdlib.org/libstaff/comm/forum/.

4. CDL Welcomes Rosalie Lack

Rosalie Lack joins the CDL on June 21 as an Evaluation and Instruction Analyst to John Ober, Assistant Director, Education and Communications. Rosalie is a graduate of UCB's SIMS department, where her research was in user service issues for digital libraries. She is co-author, with Howard Besser of UCB, of a Mellon-funded analysis on the cost of digital image repositories.

Working with John, Rosalie will design evaluation and feedback materials, participant selection processes, and logistics for an ongoing evaluation program. She will moderate focus group sessions and gather and analyze data for system development priorities, promotion, and outreach needs. In addition, Rosalie will analyze the educational component of online user services and collaborate with programmers, campus library public service staff, and senior CDL staff to prepare education strategies and materials.

Welcome Rosalie!

7. Information about the CDLINFO-L Listserv

The CDLINFO-L Listserv is designed for UC library employees as a first step in CDL efforts to build an active communications program to inform the UC community about progress in creation of the CDL, policy issues under discussion, and newly available electronic resources.

We hope that subscribers from the UC libraries will pass on selected information from the Listserv to faculty, staff, and students on their campuses, as appropriate. Other descriptive information about the CDL is available at the www.cdlib.org web site.

Eligible subscribers: UC library employees

To subscribe: Please send the following line to listserv@listserv.ucop.edu: SUBSCRIBE CDLINFO-L (your name)

Frequency of publication: Biweekly, or as new information warrants.

Communicating with the Listserv: While the CDL Listserv does not accept submissions, subscribers are encouraged to send suggestions, thoughts, and comments on material in the Listserv or on related issues to the CDL at cdl@ucop.edu.
