The CDL is pleased to announce that Brian Warling is joining the staff on June 15 as the Design Coordinator for the CDL, reporting to Laine Farley, Assistant Director, System Services. He will lead in the development of the CDL web site, which is designed to facilitate access to digital library services and collections and to communicate the mission of the CDL to the UC community and the general public. The site will integrate information resources and retrieval systems, knowledge management services, and documents related to CDL planning efforts, projects, tools, and information to assist library staff.
Brian comes to the CDL with extensive experience in the development and management of web sites, and in the design of educational and instructional materials and programs. Most recently, he was the Manager of Digital Library Operations at the UC San Francisco Library and Center for Knowledge Management, where he was responsible for maintaining and expanding GALEN II, the UCSF digital library. Previously he served as Personal Information Management Specialist for Clinical Programs at UCSF, providing education and information management consulting services for UCSF faculty, staff, and students. He has also served as End-User Search Services Coordinator in the Biomedical Library at UCLA, developing instructional programs and materials involving electronic resources, and as a science librarian at Occidental College in Los Angeles. In addition, he has participated in the National Library of Medicine Associates Program for library and information science graduates interested in the health sciences.
Brian holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from UCLA and an M.L.S. from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, UCLA. He has written numerous articles on information management for national publications.
Part of the focus of my first month at the California Digital Library has been to establish acquisitions procedures for the CDL. This follows the important collaborative work among campuses of creating a collection development framework and policies, and the advisory process of resource selection.
There are myriad details and complexities to researching and evaluating a vendor's or publisher's electronic offering to complete the selection process. Every part of the CDL is involved: CDL Technologies works with the publisher to devise links to abstracting and indexing databases, both System Services and Education and Communications evaluate delivery mechanisms for integration into CDL design, and Business Development works on licensing issues.
As part of the collaborative effort, the CDL is taking advantage of the expertise offered by UC campuses. The Acquisitions Department at UC San Diego will handle a large part of the acquisitions process, including orders, receipts, invoice payments, maintenance of records, and reports. In the future, UC campuses can expect UCSD to document the co-investment arrangements and to handle both campus recharges and disbursements. UCSD will maintain CDL order records on its Innovative Interfaces system, and all campuses will have access to these records.
To facilitate acquisitions activities in the shared environment, every campus has named an Acquisitions Contact:
Jody Bussell, UC Berkeley
Mary Engle, CDL
Sandra L. Grant, UC Davis
Tim McAdam, UC Irvine
Michael H. Randall, UCLA
Sheryl Davis, UC Riverside
Terry Vrable, UC San Diego
Paul J. Wakeford, UC San Francisco
Catherine Nelson, UC Santa Barbara
Karen Mokrzycki, UC Santa Cruz
I would like to thank the following acquisitions personnel at UCSD, who helped make the arrangement possible and will manage much of the work:
Karen Cargille, Head of Acquisitions
Terry Vrable and John Archer, Electronic Ordering Unit
Katie Grimm, Book Fund Accounting
For further information please contact Mary Engle at CDL (mary.engle@ucop.edu).
The ACM Digital Library, produced by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), is now available to UC users via the Melvyl web system from the Electronic Journals page. Users can also view the full text of many journal articles via citation links in the Melvyl abstracting and indexing databases. This resource, licensed by the California Digital Library, offers nearly 20,000 citations from ACM journals, magazines, and conference proceedings in the field of information technology from 1991 to the present. There is also full text for journal articles. Tables of contents for journals and magazines date from 1985 to the present, and tables of contents for conference proceedings date from 1985 to 1996.
If you have problems accessing or using the Melvyl system or have questions, including questions about the status of electronic journal collections and Internet resources, you can contact CDL staff in one of the following ways:
- For immediate assistance, call the Melvyl System Helpline at (510) 987-0555. Callers with TDD equipment, please call 1-800-735-2929 in California for the telephone relay operator.
- Send an e-mail message to melvyl@www.melvyl.ucop.edu.
- Click on "News" on the Melvyl web system (
For information about whether your UC campus has access to a particular electronic journal or Internet resource, contact your local reference librarian.
The current Melvyl web system URL will continue to be valid for the foreseeable future; campus libraries and users will not need to change campus links or individual bookmarks. In our last issue, we mentioned that the CDL would replace the current link to the Melvyl system on the UCOPInfo "Libraries" page with a link to the upcoming "About CDL" page and implied that the old URL would no longer be valid. Our apologies for any confusion.
With this issue of the CDLINFO-L listserv, we are launching a regular news item, "CDL Milestones," to keep our subscribers informed about progress in building the CDL. It will include major milestones from the past, as well as important plans and actions for the future.
Past Accomplishments:
8/96 President Atkinson announces the Library Planning and Action Initiative (LPAI), to create a framework for library development over the next 5-10 years. 12/96 LPAI Advisory Task Force holds its first meeting. 2/97 LPAI web site launched to provide current information about the Initiative and strategic projects to the UC community. 4/97 Project Muse available to UC users, providing access to the full text of 40 social sciences and humanities journals. 8/97 Kluwer Online available as a trial to UC users, providing access to the full text of over 110 journals in philosophy, linguistics, computer science, engineering, biosciences, business, and economics. 10/97 California Digital Library constituted to provide access to shared digital collections that support the University's research and teaching missions and to offer services that facilitate access to those collections. 10/97 Richard Lucier appointed Founding University Librarian and Executive Director of the CDL. 10/97 Academic Press's IDEAL Service available to participating UC campuses. Springer's LINK Service available as a trial service to all UC users. The first provides access to abstracts and full text of 175 journals in the sciences; and the second, to the abstracts and full text of over 200 science journals. 3/98 GaleNet Encyclopedia of Associations available, providing access to information on national and international associations. 4/98 LPAI Advisory Task Force Final Report issued; Task Force dissolved. 5/98 ACM Digital Library, SIAM Journals Online, and STAT-USA available. The first provides access to the full text of ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) journals; the second, to the full text of 10 mathematics research journals published by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM); and the third, to economic, business and trade information produced by the U.S. government.
Coming:
Summer Content licensing negotiations continue with 98 American Chemical Society, IEEE, Elsevier, Kluwer Academic Publishers, JSTOR, and Springer-Verlag. 7/98 The CDL will establish an interim web site, "Systemwide Planning for Libraries and Scholarly Information," to keep the UC community and public informed about Universitywide library planning activities and initiatives, including the CDL. 7/98 The CDL will establish a new CDL web page, "About the CDL," to provide general information and progress reports. 1/99 CDL web site of collections and services due to open.
The CDLINFO-L listserv is designed for UC library employees as a first step in CDL efforts to build an active communications program to inform the UC community about progress in creation of the CDL, policy issues under discussion, and newly available electronic resources.
We hope that subscribers from the UC libraries will pass on selected information from the listserv to faculty, staff, and students on their campuses, as appropriate. In the future, we plan to develop a communications program to reach UC faculty, staff, and students, as well as others outside of UC who may be interested in our activities. We are also in the process of designing a CDL web site. In the interim, we are maintaining the current Library Planning and Action Initiative (LPAI) web site http://www.lpai.ucop.edu and have opened it to the public.
