2. Art Abstracts and Art Index Retrospective Now Available in CDL-hosted Databases

Access to H. W. Wilson's Art Abstracts (1984-present) and Art Index Retrospective (1929-1984) via the CDL-hosted databases (Z39.50) is now in place. Art Abstracts became available on July 19th in the web and telnet interfaces to the CDL-hosted databases and Art Index Retrospective was added to both interfaces on July 27.

SearchLight status: SearchLight used the previous supplier of Art Abstracts (OCLC) and so must be modified to use Wilson's version (via Z39.50). Searchlight searches of Art Abstracts should be restored by mid-August.

Leslie Abrams (UCSD) is the Art Abstracts/Art Index Retrospective Resource Liaison.

3. GenderWatch License Re-Negotiated

SoftLine Inc.'s GenderWatch database has been added to the CDL's license with Softline. Eight UC campuses subscribe to GenderWatch at favorable rates and terms negotiated as part of the CDL 1999 Ethnic Newswatch subscription.

GenderWatch is a full text database comprised of periodicals and other publications that focus on the impact of gender across a broad spectrum of subject areas. GenderWatch supports programs in business, education, literature and the arts, health sciences, history, political science, public policy, sociology and contemporary culture, gender and women's studies and more. Publications include academic and scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, regional publications, books, booklets and pamphlets, conference proceedings, and government, non-governmental organization (NGO), and special reports.

GenderWatch contains archival material, in some cases as far back as the 1970's with additional archival material continually added, making it the repository of an important historical perspective on the evolution of the women's movement and the changes in gender roles and understandings over the last fifteen to twenty years.

Victoria Williamson (UCSD) is the GenderWatch Resource Liaison.

5. MyLibrary@CDL Prototype Now Available

The Tools and Services Working Group identified the need for a customizing tool to help users manage frequently used information resources in a meaningful way and integrate other personalization services. They issued a call for ideas in December 1999, identifying several existing services as examples. Of these, MyLibrary@NCState elicited the most favorable comments from library staff in campus visits by the TSWG and through online feedback. CDL obtained the software from North Carolina State University Library, adapted it and spent the last few months creating the prototype version of MyLibrary@CDL.

A link from the July 2000 Release page [http://www.cdlib.org/libstaff/july2000] to the MyLibrary@CDL prototype version has been added.

IMPORTANT: Notes about the current status and future plans for MyLibrary are at ["http://www.cdlib.org/libstaff/july2000/mylibrary/">]. Please read them carefully and share them with your colleagues.

MyLibary@CDL will undergo an extensive period of review, testing, focus group evaluation, and campus coordination before going into full production, currently scheduled for July 2001 if it proves to be a useful tool.

The version you see today is only the first iteration. Some things to keep in mind during the prototype include:

  • Any accounts you create may not carry over to the production version. Although we hope to avoid replacing the underlying database, it may be necessary to rebuild it as we discover changes that need to be made. In that case, existing accounts will disappear.
  • It will NOT be ready to link to your library web site or promote to users until it moves to production. It's fine to let users try it out, but they should understand it is in an early test phase and has limitations.
  • It may not be available 7x24. We hope to make it available as much as possible, but since it is not yet a production service, we may need to bring it down during regular hours.
  • It has only a limited set of features. Others will be added as we know more about what users want, and we can prioritize development activities.

We welcome all feedback. Please send your comments to cdl@www.cdlib.org.

6. Alan Ritch Reappointed to the CDL Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections

Alan Ritch has agreed to serve a second term on the CDL Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections. The committee appreciates Alan's substantial contributions to date and his willingness to continue in this role. Terms are normally three years but were initially staggered to assure continuity. The charge is posted at [http://www.cdlib.org/libstaff/sharedcoll/jsc/]

7. Shared Cataloging Update: Journal Cataloging and PIDs Complete (Becky Culbertson, UCSD)

With the addition of Ethnic Newswatch titles, cataloging of all the online journals in the publisher packages for which CDL has licensed access (as of June 30) has now been completed.

The following is an update on the number of completed Bibliographic Records:

  • Academic IDEAL (191 records)
  • Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) (22 titles)
  • Blackwell Science (Synergy) (241 titles)
  • Company of Biologists (COB) (3 titles)
  • Elsevier ScienceDirect (969 titles)
  • Ethnic Newswatch (194 titles)
  • IEEE Xplore (159 titles)
  • Institute of Physics (36 titles)
  • JSTOR (164 titles)
  • Kluwer Online (432 titles)
  • Project Muse (111 titles)
  • Science (2 titles)
  • Springer LINK (363 titles)
  • Wiley InterScience (257 titles)

The substitution of PIDs (Persistent Identifiers) for URLs in all the CDL electronic journals is also completed (see CDLINFO Vol.3, No.6 [http://www.cdlib.org/news/cdlinfo/cdlinfo051600.html#5] for information about PIDs).

The updating procedure of adding new, changed, and deleted information in the 599 MARC field is going smoothly.

Cataloging ACM conference proceedings is in progress. Since these are primarily monographs, their records will not be sent to CDL until HOTS and the Shared Cataloging Program (SCP) Steering Committee determine policies and procedures for monographs.

Further information about the CDL Shared Cataloging Project is available at: [http://orpheus-1.ucsd.edu/disc/cdl/].

8. e-Book Task Force Appointed

An e-Book Task Force has been appointed by the Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections (JSC) to define e-book operating guidelines and desirable features and evaluate current e-book experiments. The goal is to prepare a progress report by December 15, 2000 and final results by March 2001. Information about the task force's progress will be available at: [http://www.cdlib.org/libstaff/sharedcoll/jsc/ebook/]

The charge to the Task Force is as follows:

  • Define operating guidelines and desirable features that will make e-books most useful for instruction and research in the University of California.
  • Evaluate the ongoing experiences at UC campuses (specifically at UCB and UCSD and their netLibrary experiments).
  • Examine other academic library e-book experiments (other institutions, other content providers).
  • Identify potential Universitywide or multi-campus strategies that should be pursued or explored further.

The current members of the task force are:

  • Lucia Snowhill, Chair and Joint Steering Committee Liaison (Santa Barbara)
  • Anna Gold (San Diego)
  • Rosalie Lack (CDL)
  • Milt Ternberg (Berkeley)
  • Mary Engle, Vendor Liaison (CDL)

9. Co-Library Staff

a. Patricia Cruse Joins the CDL

Trisha was previously on assignment to the CDL from UCSD. As of August 1, she has been appointed to fill the Manager of Content Development position in CDL's Shared Content unit. In the immediate future she will continue to spearhead digital government information initiatives, including California Counts. Please join us in welcoming Trisha to her new CDL position.

b. Ken Weiss Departs the CDL

Ken Weiss left the CDL on July 12 for a programming position in the private sector. Ken made significant contributions to the Technology Architecture and Standards Working Group and to a number of projects, including the eScholarship project, Online Archive of California, and Persistent IDs (PURL Server). We will miss Ken's expertise and good will.

Recruitment for vacancies in CDL-T have begun (see: http://www.ucop.edu/humres/jobbull.html)
c. Ellen Dunn, CDL Management Services Officer Departs the CDL

Ellen Dunn left her permanent position at the CDL as Management Services Officer on July 28th to move to St. Louis, MO with her family. Ellen, who joined the CDL in July 1998, was instrumental in establishing the CDL's business and administrative operations and in managing its budget. While we will greatly miss Ellen's presence in the office, we'll continue to benefit from her advice and expertise since she has agreed to work for us remotely until the position is filled.

Recruitment for her replacement has begun (see: http://www.ucop.edu/humres/empopps.html#app).
