1. CDL Directory Submission Pilot Project - Call for Participants

As was described in the June 18, 1999 (v.2, no.9) issue of CDLINFO, the CDL will be conducting a pilot project in early September in which a small group of campus libraries will add locally licensed content to the CDL Directory. The purpose of the pilot is to help determine the best way to handle the submission process in a production environment. Records submitted during the pilot will also be added to the CDL Directory.

Libraries that wish to participate should submit a brief proposal -- by Friday, August 27, 1999 -- outlining what they propose to do; i.e., how many records they plan to submit, who will be actually submitting records, confirming that they are willing to participate through to the pilot's completion. Instructions on where to send the proposal, along with more details on the pilot, is available at this web page:

2. Joan Gargano and Patrick Newell to depart the CDL

Joan Gargano, Director of CDL Technologies, has accepted an exciting offer to become CIO at a startup company in private industry based in Boulder, Colorado. Joan's leadership of the CDL Technologies staff, and contribution to CDL planning and development, as well as to UC's Office of the President technology planning, has been invaluable, and she will be sorely missed.

Joan is working with University Librarian Richard Lucier and Acting Associate Vice President for Information Resources and Communications Jim Dolgonas, to assist with a transition plan to new leadership for CDL-T. The recruitment for Joan's replacement is already underway and every effort is being made to place a strong digital library technology leader in this key position as soon as possible.

Patrick Newell, Special Assistant to the University Librarian for Strategic Projects, has decided to pursue an exciting opportunity as the Associate Director for Digital Operations at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City. His last day with the CDL will be Wednesday, September 8, 1999.

Patrick has been a valuable member of the CDL team from the beginning. The CDL has relied on his expertise, strong work ethic, and good humor to help us meet the daily challenges we face in building a new enterprise.

Please join us in congratulating and wishing both Joan and Patrick well in what will surely be great adventures for them both.

3. Digital Library Instruction Issues - New Listserv Available

In response to advice from the CDL Education Working Group and discussions at the Spring DL Strategies forums and elsewhere, a new listserv for the discussion of education and instruction issues related to digital library resources and services is now available. DLINSTRUCT-L will start as an open, unmoderated list which will be valuable for staff from all campuses to discuss best practices, opportunities for collaboration, production of shareable materials, and other instruction issues. We encourage all those interested in instruction issues related to digital resources to join the listserv.

Please share this message with other UC colleagues who you think might be interested.

To subscribe: Please send an email to listserv@listserv.ucop.edu, with the following in the body of the message: SUBSCRIBE DLINSTRUCT-L .

4. Academic Universe Offers New Web Interface [Linda Kennedy, UCD]

Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe Changes: August 20 Implementation of New Web Interface

Six UC campuses (Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and San Diego) subscribe to Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe through Solinet, a library consortium. On Friday, August 20, 1999, CIS will unveil a new user interface for Academic Universe based on the feedback from students, faculty and library staff participating in the 1999 Design Partner Program (UC Berkeley was a participating library).

The home address for Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe will remain the same [http://www.lexis-nexis.com/universe].

As announced in the July 1999 Academic Universe newsletter, changes include:

  • A newly designed interface. A key change is that Academic Universe is incorporated into a suite of Web services. For those who subscribe to other CIS web products you will now be able to link back and forth between those products seamlessly, as well as conduct suggested searches within the suite.
  • Research categories collapsed into five main areas: News, Business, Legal Research, Medical and Reference with smaller research categories behind each of these.
  • Enhanced legal materials including U.S. patents, European Union legal information, state attorneys general opinions, and assorted Martindale-Hubbell publications.
  • Enhanced search options for most search forms including both a Basic and More Options choice, the ability to sort documents by relevancy, the ability to conduct full text searches and the addition of "More Like This" links (which automatically retrieve similar documents to one found in your earlier search).
  • Searchable source lists at both the full database level as well as specific to the context of each search form.
  • Ability to E-mail search result citations to yourself or to print, download or to e-mail single documents in FULL or KWIC version.

Additional news and screen shots of the new interface are viewable at: [http://www.lexis-nexis.com/cispubs/brochures/academic_universe_redesign/Def ault.htm]. Limited access to the test database is available for preparation of BI materials; see the July 1999 Academic Universe newsletter for details.

Academic Universe newsletters are archived at [http://www.lexis-nexis.com/cispubs/Catalog/universe/academic%20universe/ newsletter/newsarc.htm]. Subscription information is provided in each issue.
