1. UC Libraries Digital Preservation Repository Update

For the past several months, CDL staff have been developing the core infrastructure for the UC Libraries Digital Preservation Repository, which will launch in 2005. The infrastructure consists of a set of services that support the long-term retention of digital objects for the benefit of the UC libraries, their affiliates (e.g., campus museums), and their users. The services and associated storage are based at the CDL.

Authorized users at the UC libraries will have the ability to submit digital objects, request their dissemination, and ask for administrative reports. Multiple versions of an object can be deposited, and individual versions of an object can be removed or replaced. External access will be restricted to those authorized by the library depositing the digital object.

Digital objects submitted to the digital preservation repository must result from research, teaching, or learning at UC, and be of persistent value to the broader UC community. Campus libraries will select materials based on guiding principles of value and rights.

The digital preservation repository's development phase is expected to last through September 2004. In a pilot phase from September through December 2004, the CDL will test the digital preservation repository's infrastructure by depositing content, evaluating systems, and making refinements. During this period, presentations and needs assessment will take place for all 10 campuses. CDL preservation program staff will be contacting your campus soon.

In January, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, and UC San Francisco will begin depositing content in the digital preservation repository as a small pilot phase. UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz will be given training so they can begin depositing content in March. The full rollout of the digital preservation repository to all campuses is planned for March 17, 2005. A detailed timeline can be found at: http://cdlib.org/inside/projects/preservation/dpr/timeline/

This summer, the CDL digital preservation group convened an ad-hoc meeting of digital preservation repository pilot users from UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, and UC San Francisco. The meeting helped the CDL gain a better understanding of how the campuses envision using the digital preservation repository while providing campus representatives with an overview of the repository's services.

More information about the CDL's digital preservation program and the digital preservation repository is available on Inside CDL at: http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/preservation/

2. New Resources Available

a. U.S. Congressional Serial Set

By Linda Kennedy, UC Davis

The UC libraries now have access to Readex's digitized version of the U.S. Congressional Serial Set at: http://uclibs.org/PID/42461

The U.S. Congressional Serial Set is a collection of primary source materials covering the period 1817 through 1980 (the 15th through 96th congresses). It's made up of congressional reports and documents, arranged in sequentially numbered volumes. Many important executive agency documents were printed in congressional editions during the 19th century, making the U.S. Congressional Serial Set an incredibly rich resource covering nearly every aspect of society. The set includes the American State Papers, a retrospective collection of materials originating from 1789 through 1838 but published in the second quarter of the 19th century.

The interface offers both a simple and advanced search, the ability to limit to tables, maps, or illustrations, and to search specific fields. Date range and adjacency searching are included along with the ability to search within results. Particularly useful is the ability to browse by subject, especially valuable to users unfamiliar with the set's organization.

The U.S. Congressional Serial Set was recommended by a wide variety of UC selector groups and was endorsed by the Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections (JSC) as an important contribution to our digital collection of scholarly historical resources. The license negotiated by CDL contains perpetual and archival access to guarantee ongoing UC research for future generations.

3. eScholarship Seminar Series Service Launched

Seminar Series, a new service for UC faculty available through the eScholarship Repository, has just been launched at: http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/

Using the seminar series service, faculty can give their seminars, lecture series, and colloquia a lasting and highly visible presence on the Internet. The seminar series service will host the full-text versions of papers as well as speaker and topic lists.

Seminar materials will be maintained persistently as part of the eScholarship Repository, which houses a collection of faculty working papers, preprints, monographs, peer reviewed journals, and other publications from more than 160 UC departments and organized research units. The eScholarship Repository receives as many as 15,000 full-text downloads per week.

4. UC-eLinks Web Site: New Information Added

Three new pages have been added to the UC-eLinks web site:
http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/uc-elinks/

  1. "Adding Campus Databases to UC-eLinks" describes policies and procedures for campuses to follow when they add OpenURL support to databases that are not administered by the CDL.
  2. "Adding Tier 2 Licensed Items to UC-eLinks" clarifies when a Tier 2 journal package will be added to the CDL instance of UC-eLinks, rather than to campus instances. "Tier 2" refers to those resources that are licensed by one or more campuses and not by the CDL.
  3. "Why UC-eLinks and not direct access to the publisher's full text?" explains why UC directs all users through UC-eLinks for ejournals rather than linking directly to the journal.

5. A-Z Lists of Journals in UC-eLinks

A current list of ejournals licensed by the CDL and each campus (except UC Davis) is now available at: http://www.cdlib.org/inside/groups/uc-elinks/a2z.html

UC Davis runs its own SFX server separate from the CDL server used by the rest of the campuses.

The lists are created using SFX, the technology used for UC-eLinks. Campuses can customize their lists, and when the next version of the software is installed at the CDL in late 2004 or early 2005, users will be able to search via ISSN, journal title, and broad subject category. Response time will also improve with the new version.

Campuses will decide whether and how they want to implement use of the lists in their libraries. The Heads of Public Services and Heads of Technical Services have been notified of the lists.

For questions concerning this service, contact your campus UC-eLinks liaison: http://www.cdlib.org/inside/groups/uc-elinks/roster.html

Or, contact Margery Tibbetts (margery.tibbetts@ucop.edu) at the CDL.

6. Melvyl Catalog: First Issue of the Melvyl Matters Newsletter

By popular demand, the online newsletter El Mel Tells, a newsletter about the Melvyl Catalog, has had a name change. Its new name is Melvyl Matters. Check out the first issue at: http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/melvyl/melvylmatters/

7. Library Staff News
