1. CDL Education Working Group Appointed

The CDL is pleased to announce the membership of its Education Working Group (EWG). The Systemwide Operations and Planning Group, Heads of Public Services, and others groups helped CDL identify its need for a consultative structure to provide advice on education programs to affect change in scholarly communication and to enhance use of digital resources.

More specifically, the EWG is charged for one and a half years to provide advice on principles and goals that will guide 1) the education/instruction programs of the CDL, 2) initial strategies and programs to create an education component of the CDL, and 3) an ongoing education advisory structure for the CDL. The EWG will draw upon systemwide public-services deliberations and campus-based instructional technology and instructional enhancement programs.

We appreciate the enthusiasm of the following individuals and the support of their institutions in working with us on important education issues and welcome them to the growing collaborative advisory structure of the CDL:

Susan Lessick, Assistant University Librarian for Research and Instructional Services, Irvine
Ellen Meltzer, Director, Teaching Library, Berkeley
John Ober (Chair), Assistant Director for Education and Communication, CDL
Ruth Sabean, Assistant Director, Office of Instructional Development, Los Angeles
Lucia Snowhill, Social Sciences Coordinator, Santa Barbara
Sandy Vella, Academic Personnel Coordinator, Davis

2. CDL Request (also known as PIR) Begins Staff Testing

Beginning this week and continuing throughout the month, ILL staff and others at all campuses will begin testing "CDL Request," known during development as patron initiated requesting (PIR). The test period provides opportunities for library staff to test implementation prior to the planned release of phase I of the service, which is scheduled to coincide with the public release of the CDL Web in January. PIR liaisons, listed below, will have details about the testing and materials that support the implementation of CDL Request.

PIR Liaisons
UCB - C. Rubens
UCD - G. Nichols
UCI - L. Weinberger/M. Tapper
UCLA - E. Adams
UCR - J. Moores
UCSB - G. Johnson
UCSC - D. Turner
UCSD - D. Kegel
UCSF - E. Amrine

3. Pre-release Web Site Available for Review

Once again, we would like to remind UC Library staff and others to use the pre-release of the CDL Web site and to send us comments and suggestions. The pre-release is available at http://www2.cdlib.org/. The opening of the California Digital Library, by publicly releasing the Web site, is currently planned for January 19, 1999.

The pre-release reorganizes and updates the information in the current web site (http://www.cdlib.org), and provides a preview version of the browsable and searchable Directory of Collections and Services. It provides unified access to electronic journals, databases, and finding aids in the Online Archive of California, plus descriptions of services. It complements the Melvyl Catalog and the many abstracting and indexing databases by directing users to those resources, to electronic journals, and to other resources. The Directory will be collaboratively maintained and will permit a "campus view" of available digital resources at the user's choice. (See the Directory's User Guide at the pre-release site for more information.) Specific views, including subject-based views, can also be created for a particular library's "entrance" to the CDL.

If you are able, take some time this month to review this web site and to send comments and questions to the CDL via the online feedback form available from every page on the site.

4. RLIN Database in Production in the Web Interface

The Research Library Group's RLIN Bibliographic Database is in production at http://www.melvyl.ucop.edu/.

The RLIN Bibliographic database retrieves citations for books, serials, archives, manuscripts, maps, music scores, sound recordings, films, photographs, posters, and computer files, in over 365 languages. This union database contains over 30 million records, from incunabula to the present, in over 365 languages, and in all disciplines from a variety of libraries: research, academic, archives, museums, law, medical, music, art, theological, area studies collections, public, corporate, and historical societies.

To locate items in your search results at UC or other California libraries, search for periodical titles in the Melvyl PE database or for books in the Melvyl CAT database. CDL has added library location information (the equivalent of D LOCATION in the Telnet version) for RLIN in both the short and long displays.

Send questions, comments, or suggestions to melvyl@www.melvyl.ucop.edu.

5. WorldCat@OCLC Database Available for Testing through the Web Interface

OCLC's WorldCat Database is now available for testing at http://merlin.ucop.edu/meltst. WorldCat (@OCLC) is the database choice at the bottom of the list.

Comments on the test version of the WCAT database should be sent to Lucia Snowhill by FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11th on any problems. We hope to move it to the public version of the Web version by the end of December.

Please note that changes may be made while the database remains in the test mode. Search options and the database description and general help screens have been carried over, as much as possible, to be consistent with information in the Telnet version.

The WorldCat (@OCLC) Database (known as WCAT in the Telnet version) contains citations for books, journals, manuscripts, maps, music scores, sound recordings, films, computer files, newspapers, slides, videotapes, etc., in a variety of languages. WorldCat is the OCLC Online Union Catalog, and contains over 32 million records in all disciplines from approximately 12,000 libraries worldwide. It is updated daily. Subject descriptors are based on a thesaurus developed by OCLC Inc., and reflect the above fields as contextual and taxonomic descriptors. Users can limit searches by date, language, and form.

To locate items in your search results at UC or other California libraries, search for periodical titles in the Melvyl PE database or for books in the Melvyl CAT database. CDL has added library location information (the equivalent of D LOCATION in the Telnet version) in WorldCat for both short and long displays.

The rest of the Z39.50 databases -- RILM Abstracts of Music Literature, the PAIS International Database, ArticleFirst, the History of Science and Technology Database, and the English Short Title Catalog -- will be added to the Web interface by March 1999.

c. Information about the CDLINFO-L Listserv

The CDLINFO-L Listserv is designed for UC library employees as a first step in CDL efforts to build an active communications program to inform the UC community about progress in creation of the CDL, policy issues under discussion, and newly available electronic resources. We hope that subscribers from the UC libraries will pass on selected information from the Listserv to faculty, staff, and students on their campuses, as appropriate. As a next step in developing a communications program to reach UC faculty, staff, and students, as well as others outside of UC who may be interested in our activities, we have launched a web site (http://www.cdlib.org) with descriptive information about the CDL.

In addition, interested parties can access the now-frozen Library Planning and Action Initiative (LPAI) Web site http://www.lpai.ucop.edu, which holds historical documents about the LPAI process.

Eligible subscribers: UC library employees

To subscribe: Please send the following line to listserv@listserv.ucop.edu
