Melvyl-T [The T in Melvyl-T will be removed on August 1, 2003.]

Melvyl is the library catalog of all campuses of the University of California Libraries, containing records for books, journals, archives, audio-visuals, computer files, dissertations, government documents, maps, music scores, online resources, recordings and videorecordings. It also includes library holdings of the California Academy of Sciences, California Historical Society, California State Library, Center for Research Libraries, Graduate Theological Union, Hastings College of Law, and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.

Date of change: Database currently available; legacy Melvyl Catalog and Periodicals Titles databases will be retired on August 1, 2003.

Related services:
Linking: Linking to electronic journals and books is available by clicking the Available online link listed by campus holdings in the 'Full Record' display format. Linking uses the 856 field in the item record and not UC-eLinks. You can see the 856 field in the MARC record display. Journal article databases will begin linking to Melvyl-T via UC-eLinks as of June 17, 2003.

Request: The Request service (for interlibrary loan and document delivery services) is currently available in Melvyl-T and checks the holdings in Melvyl-T. Request will begin linking from article databases to Melvyl-T on July 1, 2003.

Updates: An Update feature is currently available in Melvyl-T. However, since CDL is continuing to work with Ex Libris to refine the functionality of the Update feature, we are advising Update users to wait until we notify them to create new Updates in Melvyl-T. Stay tuned for further details.

CDL Profile: You will not be able to automatically transfer your existing Profile from the legacy Melvyl Catalog/Periodicals Titles databases to Melvyl-T. You will need to set up a new Profile in Melvyl-T by clicking the 'Sign In (optional)' link at the top of the web page and following the instructions. Sign In changes to 'My Workspace' after you register and sign in, and this is where you can make changes to your information, etc.

Note - Not all of the Profile information (such as your PIN number for Request, timeout settings, etc.) that was retained in the legacy system is retained in Melvyl-T because of privacy concerns and system architecture.

Saved Lists & Search History: Records saved into Lists in the legacy Melvyl Catalog/Periodicals Titles databases cannot be automatically transferred to Melvyl-T. If you wish to save this information you will need to do the following in order to retain it:

  • Print, Email, or Download this information (Saved Lists)
  • Print or "cut-and-paste" this information into a text editor (Search History)

Downloading to citation management software: Import filters are currently available for EndNote, ProCite, and Reference Manager from ISI ResearchSoft. On the ISI ResearchSoft filters page, look for "Library Catalog (MELVYL)". You can find more information under Importing Search Citations in Melvyl-T's Help section.

Note - Connection files for Melvyl-T are currently being created by ISI ResearchSoft. These should be available in the near future. Stay tuned.

SearchLight (cross-database searching): Melvyl-T will be implemented in SearchLight on July 1, 2003.

MEDLINE (PubMed)

The MEDLINE search interface was moved from the CDL MEDLINE/HealthStar service to the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) PubMed service. Some of PubMed's special features include links to databases of proteins, genomes, structures, and nucleotides; access to the most recent citations, often within days of a journal being published; and the ability to find related articles with the click of a button. A further advantage of PubMed is that it remains freely available to students once they graduate and leave UC.

Date of change: Access via PubMed with UC links to content, holdings and Request began on 7/18/01; CDL's version was discontinued 12/21/01.

Methods of accessing this database:

  1. From your campus library web site.
  2. Go to the UC-licensed databases pull-down menu on the CDL-hosted Databases page (http://www.dbs.cdlib.org/) and select "PubMed", then press "go to it now" and select your campus location.
  3. Go to the CDL Collections and Services page (http://www.cdlib.org/collections/), then use the "Article Databases" pull-down menu to select "PubMed", then press "go" and select your campus location.
Related services:
Linking: A new linking service, UC-eLinks, provides links from PubMed citations to provider web sites for full-text journal articles, biological data, sequence centers, and other sources of data from third parties. In the Abstract, Citation and LinkOut display formats, campus-specific and UC-eLinks icons appear to indicate links to the e-journal content. In addition to the campus-specific and UC-eLinks icons, selected publisher web site icons appear which may also be used to access full-text. Links to UC content and holdings began 7/18/01 via NLM's LinkOut service; UC-eLinks were implemented for most campuses in June/July 2002.

Request: CDL has been added as a document delivery provider, which allows users to access CDL Request and get holdings information by using a special URL available on your campus library web page or by choosing these services via the Cubby. Additionally, access to this service is now available via UC-eLinks as well.

Updates: PubMed has a feature called "Cubby" which allows you to store a search and then check for new items added to PubMed since you last stored or updated your Cubby stored search. Stored searches are numbered and listed in descending order according to the date and time they were originally stored. The MEDLINE transition team has recommended BioMail, an update alerting service for PubMed, for creating updates delivered to your e-mail, similar to the Update feature in CDL-hosted MEDLINE/HealthSTAR.

CDL Profile/Search History: Profile will be available for Request via UC-eLinks. Additionally, end-users can save searches across sessions in PubMed by creating bookmarks in your web browser, or by using the "Cubby" feature.

Downloading to citation management software: It is possible to import citations into EndNote, ProCite or Reference Manager. To import search results into a reference manager program, change the Display format to MEDLINE before clicking on the Save button. This format includes the field tags needed for these programs. Consider changing the .fcgi extension to .txt if you wish to open the file in a text editor, word processing or reference manager program.

SearchLight (cross-database searching): PubMed searching via Searchlight has already been enabled; however, the "go to it" links do not use the special UC URLs, so users need to set their e-journal and "order" preferences via the Cubby.
