University of California Image Service: UC Shared Images

UC Shared Images delivers essential image collections UC-wide.

For the first time, UC campuses can collaboratively develop image collections and share them across the University of California system, reducing redundant effort and providing a convenient, single point of access to the essential images faculty need for teaching.

CDL has joined forces with UC visual resources curators to build the first set of shared collections in 2008.  Individual campuses that choose to contribute images will be able to share their images UC-wide via the ARTstor hosting platform. CDL will host licensed image collections in ARTstor as part of UC Shared Images.

Other Collections

Luna Insight Collections

More than 30,000 images are available in these collections offered exclusively to Insight clients. CDL will provide access to requested collections periodically. Requests for new collections are approved through the JSCSC process for adding open-access resources.

Collection Development

UC Shared Images in ARTstor

The greatest potential of UC Shared Images is to enable strategic collection development across the University of California reducing redundant effort and providing access to the images faculty need to teach. CDL is working with the UC Libraries Collection Development Committee (CDC) and other stakeholders on a collection development program for UC Shared Images, which will be managed by the Collection Liaisons for UC Shared Images (see Groups). The Collection Development Program Proposal is now available. [PDF]

Licensed Collections

CDL acquires licensed image collections based on recommendations from the Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections (JSCSC). The UC Bibliographer Groups and Visual Resources Curators make an annual recommendation to JSCSC for licensed image collections. Additional recommendations for content may be brought to the attention of your campus visual resources curator, any campus librarian, or a member of the JSCSC.

Image Service Discussion List (mailto:imageservice-l@ucop.edu)

CDL manages a discussion list for image service administrators and stakeholders (e.g., visual resources curators, librarians, educational technology/media services, academic computing/IT support). The list is primarily a communication channel for news about the UC Image Service. Secondarily, the list provides CDL with an advisory group of domain experts on image service issues, and finally, the list exists as a discussion forum for members.

To subscribe, send an e-mail to (listserv@listserv.ucop.edu).  In the body of the message (do not include a subject line), type: "subscribe imageservice-l@ucop.edu [type your first name and last name here]".

Background on UC Shared Images

In 2007, the CDL Image Service Strategic Planning team re-envisioned a shared service that would leverage CDL’s strengths in licensing and facilitation to bring together image collections from each campus for sharing across the University of California system.  CDL has joined forces with nine UC campuses to implement this service. Read more about what it is and how it works…

For background on the development of the UC Image Service, see the Image Service Demonstrator Project website.
