OAC EAD Web Templates

EAD Version 2002

Template Usage

  • These online forms were developed by the OAC for generating collection- through item-level finding aids that are compliant with the OAC BPG EAD and EAD Version 2002. Encoders cut and paste segments of their non-EAD finding aids into the form, or enter collection data directly into the form. The form is then converted to a text file and saved as a XML EAD file. EAD files should be validated and checked for OAC BPG EAD-compliance using a XML parser, in addition to voroEAD and/or the OAC BPG Validator.

The template cgi program used to generate the encoding, including several sample templates, is available for downloading. Please note that there is currently is no documentation, however, on implementing template syntax or using the cgi program to create your own template.

  • Templates are available to all OAC contributing members. Request a template using the OAC EAD Web Template Request Form. Institutions should note the following template features and options:
    • Internet Explorer or Netscape 6.0 is required for use of the templates.
    • Templates produce XML markup only.
    • Templates contain some basic customizations (such as repository-specific contact information, and default access and publication rights statements).
    • Contact the OAC if you would like edit default information or heading values in template fields. Note also that EAD elements with LABEL attributes in <archdesc><did> also have default values -- these may also be edited by contacting the OAC.
  • Please read the OAC EAD Web Templates Guide before completing your first template.
  • For information on the scope, functionality, and use of the OAC EAD Web Templates as an encoding strategy, see Doing EAD Locally: Encoding Strategies and Tools.
