8) What do you think should be the priorities for changing Request to improve efficiency? To improve service to patrons?
Let undergrads use Request
Better links need to be established with OCLC and other data
bases. That would help to move the requests along faster.
Also, because we are a biomedical library, any journal article
requests that become unfilled have to be taken off & then
requested via Docline which leaves the request in limbo for
a longer time. There needs to be a link between Request
and Docline for us medical libraries.
Including status of borrower on the incoming lending request. Better matching of serial holdings. Clearer way to see what Request supplied and what the borrowing ILL unit may have added to the request.
Request empowers users to make requests directly while eliminating man of the hurdles required for ILL. Request will be even better when it can look at the availability of individual items. I hope someday that users will be able to see the status of their requests. Frankly, I'm proud that UC offers this service.
Patrons should be allowed to submit a request for items which are evene non-circulating. Even if the requests is not submitted to the lending institution via OCLC, patrons should be able to submit the request via email to the proper ILL department.
The biggest impact for us would be to get more people using it,
including establishing undergraduate eligibility, and
improving UCLA's database of eligible users.
I thought request could check item status so that requests only go to libraries that show the item is available. I realize not all libraries item status is available but for the ones that do have this it would save some time and get the request to a library that can lend faster so the patron gets their request as soon as possible. In lending have had many requests for items that we have checked out. Also for items that do not circulate (ref, reserve)
There's no place to submit a 'fill in the blanks' unverified cite.
From the patron's point of view, if they are in the system, & they
can't find it, it would be nice to be able to stay in the system &
submit their request somehow. This would be asking for remote reference/ILL help
to figure out what it is. -- Patrons fill out cards all the time when they
haven't been able to find it at UCR & they may or may not have found
out if it's somewhere else in UC.
As it is, they usually bring the cite to the desk, saying "I can't find
this" and we do what we can (reference or ILL). Sometimes they write
email, but usually not. Such cites are often conference papers or
other grey literature, which is a pain do deal with anyway.
This might make more work for ILL staff, but would make the process
more conceptually seamless.

It would help our primary clients, undergraduates, if this service could be made available to them.
Adding Undergraduates to the mix.
find a way to extend Request functionality to other databases
(e.g., MLA, WorldCat)
An automated ILL management system that treats ILL transactions like circulation transactions.
Allow undergrad students to use Request. I would like to see a message on the screen somewhere telling partrons to only request each title once, even if there are multiple records for the same book.
1. open it to undergrads
2. remove limitations on the number of requests
3. continue to improve routing algorithms ( e.g. books in Psyc, monographic series)
4. implement the desk top delivery initiatives
5. provide the ability for a patron to track a request
6. consorial borrowing software selected and installed
7. ability for partons to batch order with different delivery methods ( e.g. I want one article faxed and the others mailed)
allowing undergraduates to use it.
including faculty authorization or visiting scholars to added sooner.
'
allowing special collection and/or non-circ items to go to the review file for review because then we can request for library use only or photocopy without printing out the paperwork.
1. Include all databases available via CDL.
2. Streamline the process allowing all participating libraries to have direct borrowing with pickup and checkout at circulation desks (i.e. eliminate handling by ILL staff when borrowed materials come into library unit.
3. Develop an integrated patron database....
To have one system for all 9 campuses and the two regional storage
facilities would make the entire operation more efficient. The
consortial borrowing software will be helpful to expedite the book
portion of PIR and the desk-top delivery project would help to
expedite the journal article requests.
Direct delivery to the patron, independent of ILL Borrowing unit
To be able to use Request in the Periodicals database.
patron access to personal requests and history of requests
Include non-UC libraries in the lender strings.
1) Inclusion of a "blank" interlibrary loan form for items which
cannot be located on indexes; 2) Include a budget number
prompt for patrons who request Document Delivery service;
statement indicating that there may be a charge for the service
Again, we need Docline.
Real time monitoring of request status.
Include patron status and a place for their phone numbers....time consuming to look up
For Request to be more efficient, it should be more frequently used. I believe more up front adverstising of this service in CDL would be appropriate. Also, turn off Telnet request and make CDL web the only option for Melvyl requests.
