Digitized analog materials: artificial collection of photographic materials

Introduction
This scenario reflects issues with a digitized collection of late-19th century historical and 20th-century contemporary photographic prints, created by numerous photographers (some known and many unknown).
Uses
Presentation and aggregation of digital assets via CDL websites (Calisphere and OAC), and via locally-maintained websites using CDL site building services
Preservation of digital assets in the UC Libraries Digital Preservation Repository
Users
Public access via CDL websites for research use only; no access restrictions
Ingest Method/Type
Negotiated submission between institution maintaining custody of the source and digital objects, and the CDL.
Source Object Characteristics
- Creator: Multiple photograph creators; some can be identified using information on the source prints and negatives, but many are unknown. Creators also include institution's staff photographers.
- Dates: 1883-2003 (bulk ca. 1910-1990)
- Format/Extent: 1,500 photographic prints and negatives; different formats and types, ranging from early black and white to modern color prints.
- Description:
- Selected photographs from various local history collections documenting Orange County historic homes and businesses in Old Towne area; citrus and agricultural history for Orange and its surrounding area; and Eichler homes in Orange.
- Photographs and material on Eichler homes will be produced by a photographer hired by the institution.

- Dates: ca. 2005
- Format/Extent: 1,500 METS-compliant digital objects, containing both metadata and content files
Copyright Issues
- Contributing institution may have deeds of gift and donor agreements on file for the source objects:
- Newer deeds of gift specify that donor must transfer copyright to the institution, in cases where the donor was the creator of the photographic materials. Older deeds of gift do not have this clause.
- No access restrictions noted by donors on deeds of gift.
