CDL Rights Management Framework

Step 4: Recording Rights Information

Metadata

From 2005 through 2006, RMG did an analysis of the functional requirements related to copyright metadata, identified key data elements for expressing copyright metadata, and formalized these elements in the copyrightMD XML schema. A beta version of the schema is now available, with documentation and usage guidelines.

For more information, see the copyrightMD webpage.

CDL rights metadata requirements are included in the CDL Guidelines for Digital Objects. Early versions of data elements found in copyrightMD were implemented in two CDL projects, California Cultures and the Local History Digital Resources Project.

Record Keeping

Participants should keep records of rights information that is gathered during the entire digital library workflow, as well as decisions that are made regarding specific materials. Here are some sample documents that can facilitate record keeping:

  • Sample selection and copyright heuristics [DOC]
  • Sample permissions tracking worksheet [XLS]
  • Indiana/Purdue University Copyright Management Center. Fair Use Checklist
