Trademark Protection and Use of the Name "Melvyl"

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has officially registered the name "Melvyl" as a service mark of The Regents of the University of California.

The name "Melvyl" should be accompanied by the trademark symbol ®, the letter R encircled and raised above the baseline. The following guidelines apply to the use of the registration symbol.

Always use "Melvyl" as a proper adjective, followed by “The Union Catalog of the University of California Libraries” or the nouns "Catalog," "Online Catalog" or "Union Catalog". Capitalizing "Melvyl" or placing it in quotes further distinguishes and protects the mark.

Use the registration symbol at least once in every publication with the name "Melvyl," with the first occurrence of the word, if possible.

Indicate in every publication that the name "Melvyl" is a registered trademark of The Regents of the University of California. This is most commonly done in a footnote.

If you are not able to reproduce the trademark symbol, it is acceptable to use an asterisk following the mark, keyed to the footnote:

*A registered trademark of The Regents of the University of California.
