Usage Statistics

Melvyl® (WCL) Statistics

The OCLC "Page Views" Reports cover usage from January 2010 through March 2011; COUNTER Reports cover from September 2011 to the present. Review the NUMBER OF SEARCHES section below for information on the differences in these reports.

NUMBER OF SEARCHES

CDL discontinued the “Page Views” report after the monthly statistics for March 2011 were gathered, and switched to the COUNTER report when OCLC began providing COUNTER compliant usage statistics for number of searches with the September 2011 statistics. The criteria used to create the “Page Views” report are specific to WorldCat Local. The number of searches counted this way cannot be directly compared to pre-WorldCat Melvyl or other databases from other vendors. COUNTER reports can be compared across vendor sites, since common criteria are used.

COUNTER Reports -- September 2011 forward

COUNTER-compliant reports follow an agreed-upon international set of standards and protocols to determine. A search is the results of a specific intellectual query submitted by a user and executed by a server. This can be done via a search form, or by clicking a hyperlinked word or name which submits a search query.

OCLC’s “Page Views” Report -- January 2010 through March 2011

This report counts searches by index, including clicks on Facets, next page, previous page, search from results page, search from null results page, next/previous links, embedded search boxes from campus/CDL sites, etc.

PAGE VIEW AND COUNTER SEARCH NUMBERS ARE VERY DIFFERENT

Due to the difference in data collection, the number of search based on “Page Views” and the number of searches based on COUNTER criteria are very different. The pre-WorldCat local Melvyl statistics are more similar to COUNTER than to “Page Views”.
