UC Shared Images Policies and Guidelines
Terms of Use
UC Shared Images is an initiative of the California Digital Library supporting research and teaching in the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences and other disciplines.
For each image, users must contact the institution (image owner) for available information regarding copyright status or with queries regarding permission to reproduce for commercial purpose, re-publish, or mount on an additional server, a particular digital image, text, audio or video recording.

Acquired Resources
CDL purchases and licenses image collections based on recommendations from the Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections (JSC). The UC Bibliographer Groups and Visual Resources Curators make an annual recommendation to JSC for licensed image collections. Open-access resources are selected and acquired through the JSCSC process.
Additional recommendations for acquired content may be brought to the attention of a campus visual resources curator, any campus librarian, or a member of the JSC.
Built Content
Visual resources curators and librarians build and manage the collections. The UC Libraries Collection Development Committee (CDC) has appointed a collection liaison at each campus to manage collection building. While initially the collection liaisons are focusing on providing images for teaching within the arts and humanities, they will increasingly relate to other disciplines.
UC Shared Images has generated policies and guidelines that help campuses collect, manage, and share images in a coordinated fashion. These may also be useful for other groups interested in shared collecting and metadata for visual resources.
