Data Management Plans Online

A prestigious group of institutions is partnering to develop a flexible online tool to help researchers generate data management plans. This effort is in response to emerging demands from funding agencies, such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), that researchers plan for managing their research data.

The prototype online tool the group creates will be based on the requirements of national funding agencies and the institutions conducting the research, and will build upon the DMP Online tool developed by the UK Digital Curation Centre. It will allow researchers to quickly initiate a data management plan and provide answers to various data management questions relating to their research, such as how data will be documented throughout the research project and made available for public use and potential secondary uses, how data quality will be assured, their backup procedures, and preservation plans. It will also aid institutions in identifying associated costs and in forward resource planning. Before the tool is available, the partner institutions are ready to assist researchers with their data management needs.
