The Office of Systemwide Library Planning is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nancy Kushigian to the position of Director of Shared Print.  In this role, Nancy will work closely with the University Librarians and with the appropriate all-campus groups to facilitate the planning, development, implementation, and management of shared print collections.

The appointment marks an important evolutionary step for the UC libraries as they seek to extend the successes they have had building shared digital collections to building shared collections of selected printed materials.

Nancy is already well known within the UC libraries.  At the UC Davis General Library, she has served as Preservation and Digital Initiatives Librarian and English Literature and Classics Bibliographer.

In addition, Nancy has undertaken a variety of systemwide roles: as chair of the UC Libraries Preservation Advisory Group; as LAUC’s representative on the Collection Development Committee; as an active member of two UC bibliographer groups (US History and Women’s Studies, and American and English Literature); and as a member of the Systemwide Operations and Planning Advisory Group (SOPAG) task force that assessed the costs and benefits of building a shared collection of print journals produced by Elsevier and ACM.

Through these roles, Nancy has gained experience with the issues and challenges inherent in developing shared collections that meet campus needs.

Her work on digital libraries (at UC Davis, through the Online Archive of California, and as co-chair of the CDL’s structured text working group) has given her a unique insight into the interdependence of printed and digital library collections.

The Office of Systemwide Library Planinng invites you to join us in welcoming Nancy to this important role and in wishing her every success.

b. Harrison Dekker Joins the CDL Part-Time

The CDL has hired Harrison Dekker at 50 percent time for the next 10 months to work with the Counting California team on projects related to the current site and to investigate data opportunities on a UC systemwide basis.

Harrison is currently the Coordinator of Data Services for the Doe/Moffitt Libraries at UC Berkeley.  In addition to providing data services, he is actively involved in broader library technology initiatives and currently serves as vice-chair for the Library and Information Technology Association’s Internet Portals Interest Group.

Prior to his arrival at Berkeley, Harrison worked as a programmer analyst for a Chapel Hill-based management consulting firm and for the North Carolina State Data Center.  His library experience includes stints with the State Library of North Carolina, IBM, and the University of North Carolina. Harrison is the proud father of a five-year-old son, Hayden, and supportive husband of “a terminal graduate student.”

Please join us in welcoming Harrison to the team.
